Kim T asks about some old bars in Huntington Beach that she used to hang out at...
Does anyone remember "Friar Tucks Bar", "The Keg", and the "Huntington Tavern" in Huntington Beach from the 1970"s and early 80"s? I can't seem to find anything about them in this site. They were dives but fun to hang out in.
Yes The Keg was a neat Beer Bar, as well as the one in Sunset Beach.
ReplyDeleteThe Bouy Shed.
ALL AROUND THE 70'S
And all on PCH.
But a long ways to drive from Laguna Beach.
I lived in Laguna Beach for 18 years. Ws a Cook there.
How about Netune Locker on the old pier? Let's get rid of the kite place and bring back Neptunes Locker! I miss the beautiful sunsets while having a beer.
ReplyDeleteI remember Neptunes Locker. Used to go with my brother for a couple of beers and watch the girls in bikinis. Long walk to the restroom, down under the base of the pier, however.
ReplyDeleteTC, I agree with you, bring back Neptunes Locker. That was a peaceful place to enjoy a cold beer and watch the sunset. Many evenings were spent there, and it was kind of a neat thing. Most people there knew what you were there for. If you were there for socializing they would talk to you. If you were there to ponder the sunset they left you alone. I couldn't ahve found a better place to be during those days.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Latka's Golden Glove Tavern???
ReplyDeleteMeadowlark used to be right in its backyard!! Top of the hill at Bolsa and Warner (5061 Warner Ave)... You could cruise in there while your car was worked on across the street... George would be in there sitting under his picture on the wall!
Hmm thats it,Neptunes locker..ahh the sunsets and a pitcher with good freinds. I think HB has the worst history of destroying its old history and culture, fyi the surf museum used to be my old doctors office through the 60's-early 70's anyone remember the slotcar place across from the surf theather?
ReplyDeleteWas Neptunes Locker the place just north of the pier on PCH?
ReplyDeleteneptunes was on the pier what a great place. that guy is rite get rid of the kite place and bring back some places where you can have memories like Neptunes or The Golden Bear
DeleteCrazy Burro still there? beach bl near adams, 1984 - 1990 was good place on fri. nites
ReplyDeleteMy band used to play regularly at Friar Tucks. Our drummer was Bill White who lived about half a mile away. We still play together.

Anonymous! Glad to hear from you, I was one of the bartenders at Friar Tucks in 1980, when Bill and Cleo owned it, loved that place. Do you know when they closed it down, I assume they tore it down also, OC has changed so much.
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember the 'Tavern'..I did think it was such a dive! What was nice, was I could putt my hog, the 'lilBitch, right up to the front, have a Coors and watch her.
ReplyDeleteAnd I remember Neptunes & Ella, for sure! In fact I just saw my old Neptunes license plate frame in the garage, next to the 'lilBitch, and found this site, whilst looking for accessories from Neptunes, like a new license plate frame & a larger shirt from Neptunes.
Does anyone remember Okie Dave around 1980 from the Huntington Tavern? He would be around 60 now! I would also like to remember Mark Nichols, whom I met at Friar Tucks and fell madly in love with, and always will be, even though he is no longer with us, his memory will last forever in my heart.
ReplyDeleteCagney's Irish pub on PCH next to ElDon liquour; met some nice girls there
ReplyDeleteHey all - Neptunes was the greatest. Got married under the pier and our dear friend Ella had invited our whole party up to Neptunes just to celebrate with us. She was family to us. In fact, I have an original neptunes t-shirt in original condition, two old original barstools from Neptunes that she had given to us when we got married there and a couple of the old mason beer mugs. Anyone know where the old gang are today? Bob & Lauren 12-12-87
ReplyDeleteOMG, Neptunes was the greatest! I still have an original T-Shirt from Neptunes in excellent condition. I believe over the years I've had it signed by Jan & Dean and some other Old Time Rockers. My husband and I got married right under neptunes and afterwards, Ella & Carol invited us all up for Beer to celebrate. Ella and us go way way back. She was family. She had given us 2 of the original bar stools from Neptunes which we still use today, some posters and a couple old mason jar mugs. we were the last couple to get married there before the pier went down Dec 87- Jan 88. Awesome memories and pictures we will have for many many years to come.
ReplyDeletei've asked a few friends about a tavern/restaurant on pch and about 15th or 16th that had a sign out front saying cheap drinks and lousy food, my bud jim and i would go over there after too many hours on the beach and drink their anchorsteam beer on tap. also they had jazz there regularly.. anyone remember that place......frank
ReplyDeleteHungry Joes, 'lousy food and cheap drinks' was the place your talking about. Wish there were pictures of it, but haven't found any. Joe's and Neptune's locker were my favorite spots back in the day. I could sipp on a cold draft beer and watch the sun go down at the locker. Joe's was where the barfly's hung out...
DeleteThat was "Hungry Joe's" but it burned. They had very good jazz there.
DeleteOakie Dave... Yes good friend
ReplyDeletemazzottis , it just did not get any more local. Ray.
ReplyDeleteAhh . . . You guys, I so wish we could go back in time to those days, when everything seemed so much more carefree. Cagney's Irish Pub was a lot of fun especially on hot sunny days. There was also a very cool head shop between Cagney's Pub and the ElDon called "Things For Your Head?" The owner (a Hippie Guru) would always hit Neptune's before heading home.
ReplyDeleteUsed to hang out with friends at Neptune's Locker, drink beer, watch sunsets, talk to Ella and sometimes help clean up at closing.
Latka's Golden Glove Tavern was kind of a small pit-stop to drink beer, with a relaxed atmosphere and interesting decor.
Yes, the Huntington Tavern was another. Always had a great time there too.
Does anyone remember the 5th Street Saloon, about a block from PCH? Dakota was their local bartender.
And Thank God for Perq's on Main Street - after all these years. Thank you Tony and Gary. So much Fun. Your Live Music Always Rocks!
There have been so many great beer bars and dives throughout the years and unfortunately for one reason or another have closed down. Boo!
I say bring them all back. We need another Neptune's or Cagney's By the Sea or 5th Street Saloon. Somewhere where you can casually down a few beers with a great juke box, chew the fat with some other locals and play a few games. What has happened to us?
Yes . . . I remember the Giru well. My friends and I would always have a few beers with him late nights at Neptunes and then help Ella clean up at closing time. You're right, Cagney's was always super fun especially on hot days - listening to live music, overlooking the ocean. I also remember Dakota at the 5th Street Saloon, Grivettis, The Golden Bear, The Huntington Tavern, Latka's Golden Glove, Mazzottis, The Sunset Pub . . . and the list goes on and on. What happened to us? Really would be great if we had a few great Beach Bars again. I'm sorry, but not everyone likes going to night clubs and places like Hurricanes or Baja Sharkeez - to drink with a bunch 21 year olds . . . Praise the Lord we at least still have Perqs!
DeleteCrazy Burro Bch&Adams, George's Birthday parties at Latka's(Dave Abbott drinking out of the pitcher)Grivetti's across the street(Warner), Everyone's parents were at The Hop technically in Fountain Valley, Garfields, Perqs, Spatz, Cuckcoo's Nest in Costa Mesa was ruled by HB, Punk shows at Old World, Bennigans, Ickabods afterhours and of course if you needed to find someone afterwards chances are they were waiting for a table at Harbor House
ReplyDeleteHarbor House late night i saved for those nights at the Red Onion. and i didnt see you mention Baxters on bch&Garfield
DeleteLatka's Golden Glove was the very best! Of course, that's only my opinion. George is my Dad.
ReplyDeleteAnyone remember Bootleggers?
ReplyDeleteI loved all those places Perqs with Deb, The Rose on 17th st,Ellas place,Things for your head..... Best times, I was pretty young then but not only partyed in those places but worked in them,My fave dive bar The Tavern and The Rose.......Golden Bear biggest mistake ever made tearing it down.... My docs office was down where the surf museam is now too. Its changed so much I rarely go back to visit. They ruined one of the best towns to grow up in!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete1980 was when i used to hang, south side under the pier at the GREEN BURRITO. cold pitchers of beer, pretty girls and the O.P. PRO surf contest. that was a cool spot!
ReplyDeleteThere was an Irish bar with a gravel parking lot around it at Bolsa Chica and Heil, where Taco Bell stands today... and caddy-corner from that was a small place that looked like Snoopy's dog house called The Sopwith Camel, where Hot Off the Grill is now. They were both gone by the late-70's.
ReplyDeletehelp! the music at Cagney's ? Who played there?
ReplyDeleteI know there was a lot, but I can't remember all of them.but then there is quite a few things I
don't remember from that period of my life
