Old Landfill or Pit in Fountain Valley

Anonymous writes about memories of playing in a landfill or pit in Fountain Valley during the 1970s...

i grew up in Fountain Valley in the 70's and i remember going to kind of like a land fill/pit, but it was a place that kids could come and build forts. You would climb down/repel using a rope and down in this pit/land fill, it was really huge there were pieces of scrap wood all over the place and kids would build forts sometimes 2 to 3 story forts. You could always add on to existing forts. There also was a huge lake there and you could float out on it using old cable spools. there also was a big rope swing. Does anyone remember this????

  1. It might have been a rock quary somewhere on Golden West. We use to go there and jump into the water from a bluff. Do you think that might be the place?

Anonymous is remembering Adventure Playground at Central Park in Huntington Beach, one of the hidden treasures in OC. I took my sons there when they were young.

Below is the "blurb" from the Huntington Beach city website:

Adventure Playground is a wonderful playing experience for children 6-12 years old. Kids can raft on a small pond, navigate a rope bridge, use a cable slide, go down a mudslide, and build forts. Children must wear tennis shoes and be prepared to get dirty. It is only open from mid-June through mid-August of each year (exact dates may change each year). Adult supervision is required and a small fee is charged. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday. Play ends at 3:40 pm for cleanup. Enter from the Central Library parking lot.

  5. Yeah, I used to go to Adventure Playground as a kid in the 70's. My mom would drop us off and we would play there for hours. The "New" adventure playgound is a total joke. I took my kids there and the first 10 minutes was spent listening to the "staff" explain all the rules. The good days are definately gone.

  6. Me and my sister's freakin grew up at the 'Pit', I always wondered if I imagined it or if was real. Now I'm sure of it! That's crazy, I just went back in time for a minute. Thanks for the 'memory'

  7. The old Adventure Playground was in an old Sully-Miller gravel pit at Talbert / Gothard in HB. It has since been filled in, and now has a sport complex build on top. The 'playground' was moved and made 'safe', which of course ruined it.

  9. My brother and I used to go to Adventure Playground all summer long. It was crazy -- kids were building shacks on stilts, rummaging for nails or whatever planks and tires and rope you needed. I remember a rope bridge over the water, making rafts, and just getting so dirty! It was awesome!

  11. So glad to see this thread! I, too, wondered if I had imagined this, having only been there once or twice. What a dangerous and amazing place. Wish our kids could experience it without lawsuits galore.

  12. We called it Goldenwest lake. Used to go there and ride mini bikes and play in the (Toxic?) quarry water. Maybe that's what happened to my mind.
