The Bean Hut of Anaheim

The Bean Hut was a drive-in fast-food joint located in Anaheim on Anaheim Boulevard. During the 1950s and 1960s, it was the place for local youth to hang out and be seen, kinda like Mel's Drive In on the Happy Days sitcom.

This place was before my time, but had heard other people talk about it. It's a dentist office now.

A couple of OCThen readers submitted some brief mention of it...

Man I miss the Bean Hut! North end of Anaheim Blvd. I think it's a dentist's office now :(

Lots of great eating places like Belisle's shut down leaving us with only chain restaurants. Speaking of which, I'm happy to say that a NEW Farrell's is being built in Mission Viejo, and should be open at the end of October 2009. As much as I shouldn't have ice cream, I am SO going.

I remember a waitress named Carmen....also remember parking 3 cars one behind the other, when the person nearest the front needed to leave the two cars behind them had to back up to let them out, lol.....This was during the middle and late 60's....Loved hangin there on Friday Nights....

  3. During the years 58-61 I lived in Anaheim after I got out of the Marines. I was 19 in 58 and a lettercarrier at the Post Office. As a single 19 year old I often hung out at the Bean Hut in the evenings or went there with my date. Does anyone remember the fad of painting sayings on the rear fender of their cars during that time period? I am trying to recall some tf the catchy sayings some others had on their cars. Also an Broadway their was an Ice cream and sandwich shop out near the high school on the north side of the street. Anyone remember the name? I lived in the apts down just accross the freeway from Disneyland and they were in the process of finishing the mountian. Later moved to Broadway Village. All very nice at the time, hear not so great now.
Ball road was two lane and after Stanton it got down to almost a country road.
Euclid had 4 lanes. I remember when a friend sold 11 acres of oranges near the Broadway shopping center for $1,100 an acre and he thought he was set for life. Delivering mail all over town during nearly 4 years I became quite familar with Anaheim. Being single and a late teen I did a lot of roaming and was at Knotts, and many of the other fun places. Went down to Balboa, out to Catalina, Laguna and Newport Beach There was a Large Drive-in on the road between Balboa and Santa Ana, anyone know the name? Lots and lots of memories from a long time ago!

    1. Hello,
It was the Paulo Drive In...Lots of good memories in all these comments. I am 70 and have been around this area since the early 50's. Man can I recall some changes. No one seems to remember the Pink Onion Drive In on Harbor and Garden Grove Blvd. Neat place. Thanks for all the good memories your comments bring back...JJ

  4. I too "hung out" at the Bean Hut during the summer of 1961. That is one of my most favorite memories. What I remember about the Bean Hut was the Tostado's and Butter Buns. I was not from Anaheim, but spent my summer there. Loved it!

  9. The Bean Hut was where I saw and ate my first Tostada and I never forgot that place. That was the place to go and get good food and hang out with family and friends. Fried corn tortilla crispy, then layer lots of beans on top of tortilla, cheese, chopped tomatoes shredded lettuce and some form of salsa. Delicious. My Brother-in -law Ray took me there for the first time back in 1957. Carhops waited on us as we sat in the car. I remember the boys and their poker runs also. Beautiful beautiful memories.
Tried eating at other places, however no one can make a great tostada like the Bean Hut made.

    1. I have never had such a great tostada like that since. I have tried finding that bean taste as I still remember it after all these years. I wish I could find thr family that owned it. I would drive cross country for that taste again. Those were definately the "good old days".

  10. Our mom worked there as a car hop when she & dad were first married... I can remember driving there for dinner around the time when my brother was born in 1959. If I remember correctly... we used to refer to it as "La Palma Drive-in"... She didn't wear roller skates... but we loved going to see mom bring the trays of food (awesome tostadas!) to hang on our car doors. Big-time fun for little kids!!

  11. Notice the picture at the "Bean Hut". The big round object on the roof with "Tacos" emblazoned on it was a hold-over from the original drive in "The Flying Saucer" which opened around 1947 or 48. At that time the "Hula Hut" just down the street on the NE corner of Lemon & LA Street was the place everyone went to. The
"Flying Saucer" could not compete and failed as a business after a short time. The place lay dormant until 1950 when Joe Cano reopened it as the "La Palma Drive-In", the first Mexican drive-in. The "Hula Hut " closed when the property was sold and replaced with a used car lot not too long after the La Palma Drive In opened. Joe suddenly had a booming business with all the former Hula Hut patrons switching from burgers to tostadas.
BTW, Joe did make a "killer" burger along with all the great Mexican dishes.
The local kids, former patrons of the Hula Hut, quickly nicknamed the La Palma Drive the "Bean Hut"; It stuck.

I think Bud has his streets mixed up. The Ice Cream place he is speaking of was "CURRIES" and it was on Center St. (Lincoln today) directly across from Freemont Jr. High. Just to the east of Curries was a Carl's Jr.

  15. I went to Anaheim High in the late '50's, used to hang out at the Bean Hut, yes the real name was the LaPalma Drive but everyone knew it as the bean hut. Still think about their bean tostada, they were the greatest. Had a brown '40 Ford coupe and yes we parked 2-3 deep especially on the weekends. Belonged to a car club, the T-Timers.
