The Red Barn in Westminster

Anonymous shares some memories about the "Red Barn" in Westminster...

Does anyone remember the "Red Barn" on Garden Grove Blvd in Westminster? When we "Indian Village" kids could scrounge up a few pennies off we'd walk or ride our bikes to the the Red Barn to buy our penny candy. Times were so different then. - Catching pollywogs in the ditch, feeding Dusty and Starlight (horses) on the way to Finley Elementary school in the 60s.
As far as walking to school and stopping to feed the horses, there were never horses on my routes to school when I was a kid. But I managed to find other things to divert my attention while walking to school.

I always had stores and fast-food joints that I walked past. I would stop into a convenience store or corner market and buy a bottle of soda, or pick up a candy bar. While walking back home, I'd often have enough money in my pocket to get a bag of hot french fries from a McDonald's to munch on while I walked.

  1. I lived in the Indian Village also, on Chactaw. Walked to Sequoia Elementary every day back then...times have changed. I would not let my kids walk that far to school now a days. Which street did you live on?

Ed Tunks was Ed Tunks .. The Red Barn was a total different place on GARDEN GROVE BLVD ... Ed Tunks was @ Westminster Blvd. & Magnolia ... dont I remember Ed Tunks once being called Gene Tunks as well ? There was the little chili factory across the street it always smelled so go over there when you would drive up the street ... & a old little Mobile Home Park .. We lived in HB when I was little before we years later moved up into the Westminster area but we would ALWAYS drive to Ed Tunks/Gene Tunks to get our produce esp. WATERMELON ...& CORN ON THE COB ...& later years going to tasty freeze around the corner on Westminster Blvd to get a chocolate dipped soft ice cream cone NUMMY ... I now live in Indian Village & have since 1970 on Navajo WHS class of "75" & married the guy that lived across the street from me WHS class of "69" LOVE INDIAN VILLAGE .. we always came in from HB as well back in the day to go 2 the Midway City Feed Store to get Bird Feed (my Aunt & Uncle) feed EVERY bird in HB .. they lived on 14th St. a block from the beach .. My Uncle wore #10 badge for HBPD & my Aunt worked @ the end of the Pier @ Pappy's (Papie's)sp? ... NOW THOSE WERE THE DAYS !! 1963 for me & on. Midway City Feed is still there I was just in there last month picking up Bird Feed cause I feed all the birds in Westminster now with my grandaughter just like I did with my Aunt & Uncle back in the day ... WOW yes Life was GOOD !

    1. I lived on the corner of Apache and Zuni and in Zuni Court in the late '50's and early '60's. I caught polywogs and frogs, too, on the the way to Finley. I used to put them in my pocket and forget about them.

There was a clinic and we used to scrounge around the trash can for hypodermic needles. We liked to use them for water pistols.
