The Dory Fleet of Newport Beach

Anonymous asks if anyone remembers the dory fleet out of Newport Beach..

Anyone remember the Dorry (Dory, Dorrey?) fleet out of Newport Beach near the Pier?
I didn't frequent Newport Beach much while I lived in OC, but there is a website dedicated the dory boats...

  1. Yes! It is still there. Captain Bob is a nice guy who runs the place, if I'm not mistaken. He is in a wheel chair but seems to get things done well. It is alot cleaner than years ago.

  2. Yes, very interesting, I have been there is the lATE 40'S AND 50'S.My grandparents lived in Orange Ca.
At the age of around 10 years old they would take me to the Dorey's in NewPort Pier to buy fresh fish. The History of the website is very true to I remember those same pictures there.
Most cheaper fish sold there was Maceral, Baracuca, and Seabass.
Thanks, Steve for that link, and all very true as I can remember.

  3. Thanks for the link. My parents were from Indonesia and thought that moving from Bishop to Huntington Beach was heaven. We went to buy fish early in the morning as the boats were coming in. My mom would fry the fresh fish and garnish with a sweet hot chili pepper sauce. With a bowl of steamed white rice it was heaven.

  4. My dad used to take my brother and I walking along the beach early in the morning and we would wait for the Dorymen to come in. We used to find a lot of sand dollars on the beach. I take my kids to that spot. It brings back a lot of memories

  5. I'm the manager of the Newport Beach Hotel near the Dory Fishing Fleet. I remember as a child watchimg their boats charge through the surf. My parents then took my children there to experience this wonderful tradition.
I now send guests to the site which is still in operation.
    Don't miss it.

  8. Captain Bob is far from the person that runs the Dory Fleet! And that's a fact... He is a nice guy, you can buy t-shirts from.

  9. We used to go fishing in Newport Bay in the 60's and 70's. We would rent a boat and motor from Art's Landing. It was a lot of fun. We would also go on the half day boats from the same place. Occasionally we would see John Wayne on his boat in the bay. I think his boat was called the 'Wild Goose" or something like that.

  11. my father was one of the early dory fishermen,1938-1945.
fishing there was a total family affair. dad would go out at 4-5 am through the surf in his dory that he built himself (15 ft,with a5 hp motor. hewould go out 8-10 miles ,pick up a trout line that he had layed the day before, and lay another that we kids had baited using salt anchovies.with his haul of 3-400 lbs of black cod and several different kind of rock cod,he would head back to the newport pioer,go through the surf, and everyone would help roll the boat on wooden rollers .we'd all pitch in put nup the big beach umbrella, and be open for business It was atotal family enterprise and thinking about it brings very fond memories. customers came from all over southern california to buy their fresh ffish from us .when we sold out,we would bait up our 3-400 hook lines for the next day.Im 86 now ,but i remember it so well. Nothing like not only on the Pacific coast, but probably not any where else in the3 coutry!!!

  12. we will all loose our most treasured memories if we keep letting the government do its bidding without looking into the lives that it changes.. as a doryman.. i would like to keep my way of life.. but until the people fight for me.. i can`t pursue my right to happiness.. i am just one against the U.S.A born in newport beach, and.. i can fish, but the government took all that away, by using a false survey, it took 16 yrs for them to finally quote a biocatch limit.. (my name is mark hendriks) google it!!

  13. I've been a dory fishermen since Nov. of 1979.
My family has been fishing at the fleet since 1959. While Capt. Bob is a nice guy, he is in no way connected to the Dory Fleet in Newport Beach other than the fact that he hangs around a lot.
