my brother Frank Leal one of the last remaning Dory men fishermen just passed away 2/1/2011
he was 64 and our family lived in the area and visited it regularly..trying to raise money to put a plaque there for him.its not the same as it was when we were kids..much prettier but not the same freedom we had when it comes to the use of the beach.our father was also a fisherman if anyone would like to donate to his memory please call his sister gloria 541-582-7000

We used to go fishing in Newport Bay in the 60's and 70's. We would rent a boat and motor from Art's Landing. It was a lot of fun. We would also go on the half day boats from the same place. Occasionally we would see John Wayne on his boat in the bay. I think his boat was called the 'Wild Goose" or something like that.

I'm the manager of the Newport Beach Hotel near the Dory Fishing Fleet. I remember as a child watchimg their boats charge through the surf. My parents then took my children there to experience this wonderful tradition.
I now send guests to the site which is still in operation.
Don't miss it.

My dad used to take my brother and I walking along the beach early in the morning and we would wait for the Dorymen to come in. We used to find a lot of sand dollars on the beach. I take my kids to that spot. It brings back a lot of memories

Thanks for the link. My parents were from Indonesia and thought that moving from Bishop to Huntington Beach was heaven. We went to buy fish early in the morning as the boats were coming in. My mom would fry the fresh fish and garnish with a sweet hot chili pepper sauce. With a bowl of steamed white rice it was heaven.

Yes, very interesting, I have been there is the lATE 40'S AND 50'S.My grandparents lived in Orange Ca.
At the age of around 10 years old they would take me to the Dorey's in NewPort Pier to buy fresh fish.The History of the website is very true to I remember those same pictures there.
Most cheaper fish sold there was Maceral, Baracuca, and Seabass.

Yes! It is still there. Captain Bob is a nice guy who runs the place, if I'm not mistaken. He is in a wheel chair but seems to get things done well. It is alot cleaner than years ago.
