You know you grew up in Orange County in the 70's

-You blew your entire back-to-school clothing allowance on one pair of Chemin De Fer Jeans.

-You were banned from wearing your Sex Wax T-shirt to Sunday school.

-You and your cousin (or sister) did "shows" for your family. These were dance routines to tunes like "Billy Don't Be A Hero" or "Silly Love Songs." You remember..."I (point with both thumbs at your chest) Love (wrists crossed against chest) You (arm
out-stretched, finger pointing at bored, squirming family)."

-You doused yourself with Love's Babysoft before leaving the house.

-"The Shining" was the first scary movie you ever saw (and my last).

-You thought going to Knott's Scary Farm was the best night of the whole year.

-You used to be "Ditto Monitor" at school, in charge of helping the teacher at the ditto machine in the school office.

-You would NEVER eat "Pop Rocks" and drink Coke at the same time for fear your head would explode.

-You thought Mr. Bill was hilarious.

- You had a satin jacket with matching satin shorts and hat.

-Your family's big night out was either at Charlie Brown's, The Velvet Turtle or Sam's Seafood.

-Your Mom; colored her hair in the sink, bought her dishes at Alpha-Beta and watched Lawrence Welk every week.

-After a day spent at the beach, you thought Jack-in-the-boxes tacos were the best food ever made!

-You and your girlfriends thought Scott Farnsworth was a total babe.

-You and your seventh-grade boyfriend got back together after they played "Reunited" by Peaches & Herb at The Holiday Roller Skating Rink.

-You stayed up late to listen to Dr. Demento on your radio which was hidden under your pillow.

-You had a blue cruiser, your friend had a red cruiser, your other friend had a blue cruiser and your other friend had a red cruiser...

-You used to layout covered head-to-toe in baby oil.

-Your Mom had to bribe you into taking off your down jacket so she could wash it.

-You had a KLOS Pink Floyd rainbow bumper sticker on your bedroom door.

Please feel free to add your bits of the 70's...I know I missed some.

  1. When you came home from all day at the beach, showered, watched Wide World of Sports while Dad was BBQing burgers.

Going to Alpha Beta's once or twice a month for groceries, and begging for Hop-Scotch ice cream.

Watching the endless trucks go by with huge rocks in back, your Dad telling you a Harbor was being built near Doheny.

Getting $5 from your parents so you could by ALL your Christmas gifts for family and friends.

Walking or riding your bike to your locations; friends, beach or into town.

  2. The biggest buildings for miles were the hangers at LTA Marine Base near Tustin. Growing up in then unincorporated Irvine, I remember you could hear the wind blowing through the wheat fields near UCI. Tumble weeds blowing up the street on Santa Ana windy days. does anybody remember "The Pink Bus"?

  3. When you went to Grad Night at Disneyland for an all nighter.

When in downtown HB, you stopped at Georges Surf Shop on Main st. for a smoothie.

    You listened to KEZY.

You were a surfer or a lowrider.

You could lip sync Cheech and Chongs first album.

You knew who the 'real Don Steele' was.

    Gemco was a Saturday tradition.

HB was a blue collar beach town, not what it is today.

The Starlight Ballroom at Knotts was a hot place to meet chicks.

Traffic was a little thicker on the 405 at rush hour, but it still moved.

The Santa Ana winds always seemed to be blowing, with a strong scent of sage in the air.

A Slurpee at 7-11 was a big deal.

You remember The Lone Ranger at Beach blvd and Slater.

  4. You thought the pizza and Icee from Fedco was the best.

You wore "Dolphin shorts" that you bought at the swap-meet, or borrowed from your friend.

You used the velcro wallet, then matching purses, from the swap-meet--the ones that had the ocean sunset theme on them.

You wore your favorite OP shirt for your 3rd grade picture.

  5. The surfer girls wore hawaiian wrap skirts (and/or bikini bottoms) with crocheted bathing suit tops.
Guys wore hang-tens. 18th street in Newport was a happening beach. We used to take the bus from Anaheim. It didn't matter how long it took to get there. Strips with cheese from the Newport pier snack- shack was the meal of choice or Perry's Pizza of course.

  9. The days when freeway traffic was cleared up by 5:30 pm after work traffic.

Being looked at funny for being the first to roller skate on sidewalks and streets near the beach,

Going to Angel Stadium and sitting in the cheap $2.00 seats.

Going to dinner for 2 at a Westminster blvd Chinese rest. and then a movie at Hwy 39 Drive In, on a date for $12.00.

Gasoline was 22 cents and included a window wash and a check under the hood.

  15. You HATED windy days because your feathered hair would flap forward in one big wing, if the wind was behind you.
    Puka shell necklaces

Knowing and acting out every scene from "Grease"
Being SURE you could win on the Gong Show, and practicing your 'shows' (as mentioned earlier) in front of the family. My friend's older brother would sit there and laugh, which really pissed us off...LOL
