Glenn L. Martin Elementary School

An anonymous person wants to know if any readers here attended Glenn L. Martin Elementary School in Santa Ana...

Did anyone out there go to Glenn L. Martin Elementary school in the 60's?
It was a simplier time and I remember it being a fun school.
From there Smedely Jr. High...not so fun.
And Mater Dei...cultural shock.
. I remember riding my bike to explore the new shopping center, south coast plaza, just bean fields around then, it just turned 40!

I didn't go there, but my brother did during the mid-1980's. We lived only a few blocks up on Wilshire & Garnsey street.

  1. I went to Glenn L. Martin for two and a half years, starting in 1969. It was a fine place. I started in the fourth grade, my family just having moved to Santa Ana from Minnesota. I found the new ethnic diversity strange and wonderful. My first Spanish words were all swear words. It was a little tougher than the small town I came from. I recall that kids had a pecking order in Minnesota based on who was the fastest runner. In Santa Ana, it was about who could beat whom in a fight. These were mostly theoretical fights, mind you. We kind of agreed on the pecking order, and didn't go to the trouble of testing it.

I still remember the school song:
    "G-M-S, G-M-S
    is the pathway to success..."

The strangest things stick with you.

In the sixth grade, I had Mrs. Weisinger, who was one of the best, most encouraging teachers ever. Ironically, it was because of her that I left. She spotted me as a child who could benefit from the MGM program (Mentally Gifted Minors -- is that still around?) and that was only offered at John Adams School. So I left Glenn L. Martin in the middle of the sixth grade. But it's in my heart, you know.

  4. I attended Glenn L. Martin from 1967 to 1971 3rd through 6th grades. My favorite teacher was Mr. Bell in the fourth grade. I liked all my teachers. I remember in the 6th grade after the 1971 earthquake, Lowell Elementary started attending GLenn L. Martin so we went to half day sessions.

From Martin, I attended Lathrop Junior High which we could not occupy. The school district had moved portables in the year before due to 71 earthquake. The new two level Lathrop opened after I went to off to attended high school at Saddleback.

When I attended Glen L. Martin I would walk home ALONE for lunch. After lunch I would stop at the Tic Toc on Flower & McFadden. I usually bought a Cup of Gold candy bar for a whole 10 cents and ate it on my way back to school.

Sweet Memories Of Glenn L. Martin Elementary...

  5. Lordy...not sure why I googled Glenn Martin but this has brought back some memories. I started in Kindergarten in 1966 and was there thru 3rd grade. My favorite Teacher was Mrs. O'Neil in the second grade. She had big, brown, tall hair. Funny the things you remember. I would love to thank Mrs. O'Neil (not sure of her spelling but her first name was Pat or Patricia). She made me feel like an individual. I'm now all grown up (46) and am grateful for my time at this little school.

  6. We sang the GMS song too!
I went to Glenn L Martin for 2 years, 1st and 2nd grade, 1955-56. The school was far from home for me and my sisters, we lived at Bristol and McFadden. We used to pick crabapples, sunflowers, and oranges on our way home. Monta Vista was built in 1957, if memory serves me right, there I started the 3rd grade.

  7. Went to Martin the first year it opened in '51. I attended K-6th there. Really something to start kindergarten with some of the same people I graduated from Valley HS with.

It sure was different. Lived three streets away. We kids walked to and from school ALONE. We walked until they showed us the movie "Dangerous Stranger" every year. Then we all ran to and from school in a panic for several days.

I remember all the black & white aviation photos on the west wall of the cafeteria/assembly room. Many photos of Martin's various planes over many years.

It was a great school at a great time.

  9. I also attended Glenn L. Martin the first year it was opened, going on to Smedley after the 6th grade. The assembly/lunch room photos on the west wall were undoubtably the inspiration I received that drove me into two careers in aviation and a love of airplanes and flying.

When we moved to South Rosewood, near Edinger, our tract had just been finished and I remember very well that there were bean fields on the other side of Bristol for as far as you could ride your bike. A friend who lived across the street had an older brother who was a stunt man in Hollywood and his brother used to parachute into the bean field across the street from their home before our tract was built.

I love Santa Ana and especially my memories of it when growing up.

  10. Hello!! I went to Glenn L Martin in the 60's!! From K through 3rd. Then my family moved out of state. I've always wondered what happened to the people I went to school with during that time!! I attended 1966 to 1970. I would love to reconnect with people I've often thought of, even after all these years!!! I remember my 3rd grade teacher had this "unique" red hair that was tall. Funny. What we remember. Lunch at the picnic tables under the trees unless it rained...then we shared a room with another class...I could go on...wow.......am glad I found this site!!!!

  11. I went to Glenn L Martin from 1969-1975. I remember Ms. Gilmore, 1st grade, Ms. Swanberg, 2nd, Ms. Capizolli, Weisinger in 3rd, Ms Huzzo(pronounced who soo) in 4th.
In first grade I remember Ms Gilmore had a student from each long row daily be the nurse to check if the students ears and neck were clean.
Anybody remember that? And how about her "baby chair" for students who got in trouble 3 times, the third time everyone pointed their finger to the baby chair for the wayward student to sit in.

  13. I attended Glenn L. Martin for 3 years beginning in 1969 (k - 2nd). I then transferred to John Adams to participate in the GATE program. Does anyone remember the crossing guard, Martin, who would make funny faces with his dentures? Teachers: Kinder=Aster; 1st=Hill/Hoffler; 2nd=LeGrand. I did not like Adams elementary and was happy when my family moved to Placentia a few months later.

If I recall, you had two sisters, Becky & Jody and your dad was a pastor at a Luthern church. You and your sisters had guinea pigs and a dog named Sunny. What great memories I still have of such simpler times...Laura M Herrera

  17. I went to Glenn L. Martin in the late 80's. From kinder to 4th grade. I have a lot of memories, one of my favorite teachers was Mrs. Lindoro. Which I've met 3-4 times at Target do one on Bristol near south coast plaza. One of the memories that I really enjoy is back every Oct. the school will have this Halloween costume contest. Those times where fun, I still have a pix of those moments. An other memory that I will never forget is my first kick in the growing….lol…wow that hurt so bad, it was back in the 4th grade.

  18. Wow! Who would of thought that 45 years later, I would be writing regarding Glenn L Martin. I went to school from 1st-6th, 1966-1972ish. I lived on the corner of Wilshire and Rosewood. Yes, I'm one of the Lake kids. The very last one (Pam)I had Ms Lopez for 1st, Miss Anderson for 2nd, and Mrs Weisinger for 6th. I also remember being a part of the class who got a teacher (5th grade) fired (Mr A***) and Mrs Huuzu (Hoosoo) who took his place. She knocked us in line and we needed it. God, we were terrors... I also remember the contest of naming the school mascot-The Flyers-not the Aviators. Roger Ziesler (sic) won the contest, he drew the bywing plane, our school colors were blue and gold. I also remember the earthquake which put us into double sessions. Prior to the earthquake, the girls had to wear dresses-no pants. Once Lowell Elem came over the dress code evaporated. How about those paper drives... Thanks for the memories.

I was lucky enough to attend Glenn Martin Elementary School the first year - I was in the 5th grade and recall the grand opening and still have the signed picture of Mr. Glenn Martin himself who attended the event. I also recalled us writing our names and life goals then putting them in Mason Jars and planting them with the tree's between the rows of the buildings. I was invited back for the 50th Anniversary of the school where I talked to the current students about my memories of the school. I actually lived right across the street from the school at the corner of Wilshire and Olive Streets. I also remember the night that the Administration Office and that of the Principal Ms. Reed's office was set afire - did lots of damage including Mrs. Scott's First Grade classroom. Remember Mrs. Lily who taught 6th grade and Mr. Harlan Anderson who taught 6th grade and was the sports coach for afterschool sports. Many of my generation got their basic education at Martin - those were great days - great teachers and no-nonsense classroom disipline.

  25. Larry Means: I remember you when I went to Glenn M. school too. I lived at 1427 S. Olive, two doors down from Larry Wentzel. Gary Bridge live just a couple of doors down from that. Do you remember when Mr. Martin visited the school for opening day dedication? I also remember a bike you had added a lawn mower engine to it on the back, and it really worked great. Often wondered what happened to the old gang.

Attended K through 6th grade (1962-1968). Fine memories of the silver trikes. Had to get out to recess early or you would be stuck with a burned out red trycyle. Office fire. Silverado Cyn fire of 66' Edinger as 2 lane road. 55 and 91 freeways being built along with South Coast Pz. Favorite teachers: Mr Dick, Ms Clark, Mrs Braden, Mrs Nelson, Miss Anderson, Mr. Tress, Mrs. Hustwick, Mrs Franklin. Loved the "all purpose room" with those 6 TVs they had for off site learning. Loved riding my bike through the halls after school and on weekends. Remembering the Presbyterian church build across street and being a boy scout to troop 940. Best times of my life. Wish I could go back to kindergarden and play in the sandbox once again with my close friends....

  29. I went there for Kindergarten in '69-'70 (does that still count as the "60's"?) Anyway, I lived a little less than 1/2-mile away, and, back then, even at 7 or 8 years old, you could walk to school without an adult; my best friend and I took an hour or so to get home each night. Actually, I didn't mind the school lunches (a sack lunch with a sandwich) which we ate on the covered picnic benches outside. My kids wouldn't dare touch the school provided lunches now-a-days. Watching the moon-landing on a TV they wheeled-in is about I'll I remember. Funny-my name is Martin and my dad's name is Glenn. Yep, I did get teased a little!

  31. I attended Glenn Martin Elementary School in 1974 through 1976, 1976 was the best year of my school life and Glenn Martin really brought out the partriot in me, Cinco de mayo was always so extravagant and we had so much fun in the huge playground. I still have my year books I won't lose them for nothing. I came in around the time when most of the teachers there were retiring and had been teaching there for about 30 to 40 years maybe, and then came the transition of younger teachers and staff, it was an ultra change of gaurd, from severe disciplinaries, to open minded conservatives or liberals. Glenn Martin remains in my heart and to our mascot may he fly forever.

  32. Wow - what a trip down memory lane! I attended GLM for K-6, 1956-62. I also remember the fire that destroyed the administration office, and how the whole school smelled of smoke for weeks afterward! I was also in Brownies and Girl Scouts and we met in the Presbyterian Church right across the street. I'm amazed at the comments praising Mrs. Weisinger - I had her for 6th grade and she scared the h*** out of me! Did anyone else have Mrs. Clark for 5th grade? Linda H. C. M.

  49. We moved to 1141 S. Flower Street in 1963. Caddy corner across the street of the back corner gate of the back field. I remember the wooden fence right outside that gate on the right side of Russell Street. Many of the bigger kids would stop there to write notes on it. The little hearts with who loves who, jokes, etc.
My first grade teacher was Mrs. Olson. Second grade, Miss Upchurch. Third grade, Miss Carter. Next door classroom Mrs. Maxon.
One weekend day I went to the field by myself to play with my new GI Joe walkie talkies. There I met Randy R. and Danny G. we played with the talkies for a while when I decided to go home. When I asked for my talkie back Randy R. told me that it belonged to him. We had a small debate and I knew I was going to loose talkie if I didn’t do something quick. I balled my fist and thrust it into Randy’s face. He stood there stunned and started to cry and dropped my talkie. I picked it up and ran for home with Danny G. running behind me vowing to get me later. It never happened, we became friends instead. I agree with the pecking order comment earlier.
Then Third grade again. (I was held back in third, long story) Mrs Weatherread. Forth grade Mrs. Franklin. 5th and 6th grade, Mr. Kempf. I don’t know why it’s a blur from there. Made many friends. Keven Hill, Danny Winchester, Janet Munion, Denny Nelson, Adrian Ariola. Kevin Ames. Jerry McCall. Bobbie Provenger, Chris Amaro, Ronda Church, Ruben Reyes, Jeff Talbot, Tammy, Larry Fox, Libby, Bob Munion hall monitor, Michael Michaels, Debbie Wright, Becky Wright, and many more.
I remember the after school fights and stand offs. They were held behind the school or behind the church across Wilshire. Those where exciting times.
The cafeteria served lunch for 35 cents in the early days. Milk money was collected and Calva Dairy supplied the milk. The fire drills, paper drives, circle ball, tetherball, kickball, lunches at the tables. Thanks for the candy bar Randy, you made me cry with that.
    Thanks for the memories.
