Santa Ana High School

Santa Ana High SchoolI didn't attend Santa Ana High School, but many readers of OCThen have. I wanted to create this post as a place where all SAHS alumni can post their memories of attending the oldest high school in Orange County.

I remember while attending Santa Ana Valley, I'd hear some teachers or faculty talk about how our high school always had to play second-fiddle to Santa Ana High. They'd say stuff like, "Santa Ana High always attracts the better teachers", or "Santa Ana High always gets more funding". That kind of talk gave us students at Valley High a sense of hating Santa Ana High.

I'd read the sports section in the Orange County Register, and see more press attention being given to the SAHS' football team, "The Saints", and rarely see Valley's team mentioned. The Saints always got to play at Santa Ana Stadium (Eddie West Field).

At one time, when we lived in Santa Ana, off of Flower and Wilshire streets, I would walk past Santa Ana High School on my way to the Santa Ana Library, where I worked. I always thought it was a cool looking school with that "old school" architecture.

When I attended Santa Ana College, I majored in music. One the activities I participated in was the college choir. Dr Larry K. Ball, who directed the choir, would use the theater at Santa Ana High School for performances, and I sang there once.

That's pretty much the extent of my experience with Santa Ana High School.

If you attended, or worked at, Santa Ana High School, click on "Post a Comment" at the end of this article, and tell us what you remember.

  1. I attended SAH in my sophmore year 1963-64. It truely was a beauiful old spanish school. I remember the Senior lawn especialy since only Seniors could eat lunch there and loved to tease us lower classmen. I also attended SAVH in 1964 which did not compare to SAH in any way.I used to ditch SAVA and walk across town to visit my old classmates and my fiancee at SAH. My most memorable memory was the day Kennedy was assianate 12-22-63 and the school set up a big TV in the auditorium, all us girls were crying hystericaly and could not go back to our typing class. I have long since left Santa Ana but the memories of school and after were the best teenage years any teenager could ever had.

  8. I attended Santa Ana High in its football "heyday". We actually went to AAAA CIF Championships in my junior year lost to Anaheim who we had beaten 28-0 during the regular season. We were missing a running back by the name of Jack Meier for the championship game in Angel Stadium. Great place to grow up in and relatively safe during those years. Many places to go. Sunshine, Lolipops and rainbows everywhere....

My kids get a kick out of my stories of the good ole' days in beautiful and safe S.A. Love Esquires and Debs with Mr. Anderson and Coach Baldwin and the 68' Saints at Angel Stadium!

1946 I believe - her name was Mary Ellen Luken. She was a lovely, funny redhead and we lost her to cancer in 1970. Anyone remember Dorothy, Joanne or Fran or Alfred Scheve?....how about Chuck or Marvin Luken....my dad moved out here in 1941 and lived on Edinger in a little farm across the street from a bean field.....

I saw some of your other stories about Santa Ana Valley, it was only by rumors that schools get a bad name. Santa Ana had a bad reputation too. i don't know why because both schools were good schools.

Most of the stuff you've heard about my school is..... probably true. its the biggest oldest thugish best orange county school with kids who have the most pride, for the athletics part.
The football team is coming around: 2nd in league goin 7-4 w/ home field advantage in the playoffs.
The wrestling team is beyond legit: 17 league titles and 11 Cifs, [coulda been 3-peat champs but.. watever]

I LOVE TO HATE THIS PLACE, in my last year it was a great place to look bac an say im proud to say where im from... in the words of mr. lara: ONCE A SAINT ALWAYS A SAINT! YOU NOE!!!!

  32. I attended SAHS in the 1970's. Does anyone else remember "Gunner Shane" who had an auto repair shop near the high school at the North West corner of 1st and Flower I think? Gunner had many of the same interests in young people as Michael Jackson but no musical skills or money. I think that's why SAHS had such great track teams in those years because you had to sprint down Flower to avoid the Gunner!

  33. When I attended SAHS in the late 70's what I remember is how much the coaches liked to hang out at Zeb's Boat House on Main St. I can remember more than a few times having to send someone to the Boathouse to drag out some coach who was supposed to be at a practice or game! Good Times.

  36. my name is John Sebreros and During my sophomore year in high school I got involved in politics and focused my creative energies in “la lucha”, the struggle for equal rights. I wanted my life to have meaning. I believed that by helping our people and fighting against injustices I could find significance. A few of us students organized a high school walkout. The core student activist consisted of Mary Fonseca, Juan Barba, and I. We went to two other high schools, Saddleback, and Santa Ana Valley and got Chicano students to join in on our walk out against the Santa Ana Unified School District. We created a list of grievances that included things from a new lunch menu to our own selection of music during the lunch period over the lunch area sound system to more serious issues like equal representation in the school news paper and year book. We also demanded an equal voice in student government. The White student body controlled most of the input in school activities and assemblies. We the Chicanos hardly had any representation. Most Chicanos were apathetic in regards to school activities.
Our list of demands were not being heard by the faculty so the walk out was planned. At a certain time all the Chicano students were to just get up and leave class and meet in front of the school. The hour came and my social studies teacher Elwwod Schoff began to tremble and shake. I thought, “Check him out he is nervous about a walkout”. I felt sorry for him. He was a good teacher and I liked him because I sensed he believed I had potential. The student body consisted of about 2000 students; the school year was 1973-74. About 600 students congregated in front of the school. We marched down the streets on our way to the school district office. We were ignored by the district officials, no one gave us an ear only the word of go away.
We then rallied the students to not attend classes the next day. During our classroom attendance boycott we would meet in the park across the street from the school. We meet at Flower Street Park on First and Flower streets. The three of us, Juan, Mary and myself, took turns giving speeches and told them to not go to school the next day either. We had a few nice days at the park, playing football, talking, and hearing speeches. With the advice of Alfred Amescua, Juan Barba’s brother and other Chicano community leaders we changed our strategy. The three of us radicals flew to San Francisco to see the civil rights commission and file complaints. We also went to Sacramento, the state capitol to let our issue be heard with the State board of education. We went to see the civil rights commission. Word got back to our school principal Dr. Joan Wilson and she then cooperated with us, the petitions began to be granted.
We also formed a new student body committee that was made up of twenty students, five who represented four groups on campus, the Anglos, Chicanos, Blacks, and new immigrants. With equal racial representation on the board we started to get Chicano representation in our school newspaper and yearbook. Music of our choice was also played during lunch time. And we got the school to improve its lunch menu. We also established class elections to be held in the home room classes instead of booths during lunch time.

  37. Hey, John Sebreros! This is Abel Munoz. You probably don't even know who I am, but I was a Senior at SAHS in 73-74. I remember the walk-out. I was in Creative Writing class when all the 7 other Chicanos in class started looking at each other and then stood up and walked out. I had no clue what was going on so I stayed in class. Because I was one of those nerdy "schoolboys," everybody had assumed I wouldn't participate and so had not bothered to inform me. I wish they had given me the choice. I probably would have walked out, too. Later on, when you guys won the right to have more representation on the school paper, you couldn't find any Chicanos willing or qualified to take the new spots. Juan Barba knew that I liked to write and came to ask me to do it. By then, I was so upset with the clanishness of the whole MeCha thing that I turned him down. Looking back, I wish I had done it. Ironically, I ended up graduating from UCLA Law and working as legal counsel to the Legislature in Sacramento. So, I guess I got "in" after all. What ever happened to Juan? I always thought he was a great guy. I wish I'd kept up with him. I also remember Mary Fonseca. What an absolutely beautiful young woman! Wasn't her brother also a senior at SAHS? I can't remember his name, but he was this really tall guy. A few years after graduation, I think I saw him wearing a postal uniform. What ever happened to Mary? What a babe!

  42. Graduated 1968. Many fond memories, lunches on picnic tables, picnic tables, automated snack machines. Took wrestling, we got beat a lot, but a lot of comradeship of all the teams. We all knew who was on football, track, wrestling, tennis, and other sports. Wrestling team was real dedicated. Why, because few people joined, fewer went to the matches. Took real dedication to keep involved.

To those of you who are attending SAH now enjoy it. Know that you are attending a school that has lots of history and lots of pride. What I remember from my time at SAH was the DJ's at lunch time, the cruising and the security guards that kept us from leaving the school or skipping class. We resently visited SAH but were not able to walk the halls as it was being remodeled. I just hope that they don't make to many changes that will erase the history at Santa Ana High.

My whole family went to SAHS. My father and mother graduated in '23 & '22 respectivly,John and Vene Belle. My sister, Joan, in '52 and two brothers, John & Don, in '57 & '58. I was the class of '62. Memories were the last day of school when we'd empty our lockers out on the floors of all the paper we started colecting two weeks before which would fill the halls up about 12". I understand they clamped down on that after I left because of the potential fire hazard. Also cruising the campus in the morning showing off all the BMOC's fancy hot cars. Also the school was built to with stand earthquakes after the '33 earthquake and on the third floor was Ms.Perkins Spanish class and we'd sneak up and on the count of three we'd bang the wall with our butts which would make the whole room shake which scared the hell out of her as we took off running.

  59. I attended SAHS from 1971-74 and then teachers were teachers. They did not wish to be your friend. They were there for a job and they performed extremely well. In fact, a job well done was rewarded by having many graduating Senior move on to Stanford, USC, U. of Oregon, Arizona State, etc. No one graduated who could read their Diploma. Yes, there were issues by not like today where idiots run the school: students and administrators alike. Today, many teachers do not know their subject, especially Math teachers.

I will always be grateful to SAHS for all that it taught me. Thank you. Today, more Espanol is spoken on that campus than Ingles. That is not the Administration's fault only that they do not know how to channel those resources into something productive.

To all my teachers who helped me so much and were so patient thank you and God bless you.

  60. I loved going to SAHS, class of 1976! We had a great football team and track and swimming team. I have since moved far away from Santa Ana, California. I was married and we had our first baby in Southern California. Our family moved to North Carolina in 1996 on a job transfer and we have all been here ever since. We could never live in Southern California again, too expensive. No smog or brown skies in North Carolina like there was in Santa Ana, California. The graduating class of 1976 was a very large class. I remember sitting on the football field on graduation day and it was very hot watching all my friends and classmates graduate. It was a fun and great day! We had the best cheerleading squad also. Our Pep Rally's, were so much fun. Football games were always packed with

  64. Great school, I attended 1980-1984 and my time there was a blast. Mr Pickering the PE teacher was an old salt who could smell bullshit a mile away. Mr Thompson in auto shop was also great as was Mr Hill the football coach. I live in Colorado now but when I visit Santa Ana I stop the car on Walnut St and dream away.
