Santa Ana Valley High School

Santa Ana Valley High SchoolAnyone an alumni of Santa Ana Valley High School?

Well, I am. I went from 1981-1984, graduating there.

Valley High had the reputation of being the roughest high school in the city, and probably among the roughest county-wide. There were several gang fights there. I remember one black guy getting pounded to a pulp by a gang of Samoans. Nearby at Centennial Park, there were students and gang members that died in knife fights.

One time a guy got his throat slit while walking though Carr Intermediate School on his way into Valley High.

There was also a prankster club there called the "Crack Club". All they did was pull some unbelievable pranks, like hauling up some lunch benches up on to the roof of the Auditorium.

Watch out for Spirit Week! At this time, the seniors set their sights on the freshman and kicked their asses. I mean some kids got flat out beaten senseless. I imagine some lawsuits were filed between parents. I don't know how I managed to escape it.

At Valley High, they had a annual tradition called "The Kangaroo Court". The whole school went into the auditorium and watched a panel of judges (members of the senior class) pull some of the popular students out of the audience, and convict them of various sins. One guy was pulled up for having a reputation of dating a lot of girls. They blindfolded him, and told him that they would be bringing a mystery girl out, and that he would have to kiss her. Well, they ended up bringing his mother out! He grabbed her by the arms and laid a full-on open-mouth tongue-tickling kiss. Nobody expected such a thing; they thought it would just a peck on the lips. They pulled the blindfold off, and he just about wet his pants.

But due to political correctness, they cancelled The Kangaroo Court in 1982.

  1. Glad to see that Valley is open again. Not too much is different. Looks like a fresh cover of paint and the office was redone. The swimming i believe is being rebuilt.

  2. I graduated from Valley in 1964 - transferred there from another school in 1962.

I was on the school literary magazine, belonged to the Latin Club, earned letters in 4 sports, did drama, speech and debate, won several scholarships and other honors, and was generally a "geek" in today's terms. It was pretty difficult because I moved into a sufer school setting from a VERY conservative prior environment, and never caught on.

Any of you guys at the school today, think about that. It is always hard to be a newcomer - please give the new kids a bit of space and help them out!

I went back several times in the many years since, and see that the entire community has completely changed. Well, that reflects our society at large, too.

In those days Valley had no swimming pool. The school itself was reasonably new at the time, and we enjoyed decent classrooms, good and fairly new textbooks, an outstanding program in athletics (one of my classmates was a silver medal winner in Olympic track and field, while our football and baseball teams did extremely well in statewide competition), and actually a first-rate program in arts and languages.

Nearly all the kids there were of middle-class working families, although we had the Lukens (their Dad ran a dairy farm and chicken ranch), and a few others from the city's better-off families. We had some terrific AFS exchange students, too.

I got a very good education at Valley, and it stood up under the pressure of college and later life. I am now a well-known international maritime historian, after an earlier caerer in the communications arts.

Things are petty tough in South Santa Ana these days. The kids have a much more challenging situation. But I surely do wish them well - from an old geezer in the class of 1964!

  3. MINERVA MINARD, CLAUDE BLACK, MR. BERNARD, KAY BERRY, CAROL KUIPER, MRS. KIRKLAND!!!!

Hot dang, I haven't thought of these people in decades.

Mrs. Kirkland was ABSOLUTELY the best school principal I ever encountered, before or after.

I took both Latin - from Mrs. Minard - and German - from Mr. Black - and they were kind about letting me juggle the finals schedules so there wasn't a conflict. I think I was the ONLY member of the class of '64 to have 4th year Latin.

Kay Berry left Valley after the '62-'63 school year for Alaska. She was a fabulous English teacher. Last I heard, she survived the 1964 earthquake - then vanished from public ken.

Carol Kuiper replaced Mrs. Berry. She was a gorgeous kewpie-doll blonde who was in fact quite young at the time and looked just like one of ths students. I remember encountering her before the term began and asking for a date ... ooooppppssss, married AND one of my teachers! Damn, that was embarrassing! She turned out to also be an excellent teacher, and of course that was what mattered most.

Claude Black was one of the football coaches as well as the German teacher. He really did a good job in both posts. I went on to continue studying the language for a total of 7 years and then worked in Germany, where I blessed his name when I was found comfortably fluent. Anyone remember taking drivers' ed from him in the summers?

Mr. Bernard I have saved for last. He, too, was an English teacher, and rather good at it, too. But the tides of change seemed to be battering him badly when my brother (class of '65) and I visited again about 7-8 years later. He stood in the door of the classroom and sadly remarked, "You were the last of the good times." The big changes of society around the area were too much for this fellow, who was a severely-repressed gay man at a time when it was NOT allowed for teachers to be gay. (He never acted out his preferences around us, but in retrospect, it's obvious what was his orientation.)

If there isn't a building or a special plaque at Valley now named for Mrs. Kirkland, there should be.

  9. Note for anyone, but particularly for Anonymous of 29th December at 12:09: Here's your time warp for the day. I graduated in 63 and had Mrs. Minard for Latin for all three years, so you and I must have had a class together -- you are right, it was a small but earnest group struggling through Martial's Epigrams and various odes and elegies. I got through it through pure memorization and all I can remember now is amo amas amat amamis amatis amant. And how useful has that been every day of my life since ... Mostly I remember how severe Mrs. Minard looked, but she was actually quite sweet and even had us all ("all" sounds so big) over to her house once. She was old school. As for Mr. Bernard, yeah, I was in his classes too and you've pegged him just right. The year after graduation he asked me to talk to one of his classes, something like: what's the difference between high school and university environment. It was the right question at the right time and I had no idea what to say. There was another English teacher at Valley at the time, a very old man whose name I will leave out of this in case his ancestors somehow come after me, but that guy was so bad a bunch of us went to Mrs. Kirkland and the Guidance Counsellor at the time, Anne Vekich, and asked if we could be transferred out. When they said yes it was the happiest day of my high school existence. (We never thought it would be possible to do that.)

A hell of a lot of water under the bridge since then. Reading through all this I get a fairly good idea what came later and it must have been colorful, to say the least. No complaints at all about Valley from me. We could have done a whole lot worse.

OK, now back to the future.

  13. i went to valley for just half my freshman yr.I got caught up in the mix within the first two months.Like some say Valley is like the compton of Santa ana.I guess it really does depend on who you hang out with, but it was so hard to make a change, especially at valley. Its funny cuz somehow everyone is connected, either by the hooods, family,or just drugs.Weed was all over the place;class, lunch tables, next to the office,restrooms...everywhere.A good handful of teachers didnt care(Cahill). All the drama is what made valley fun, i guess cuz that was the only thing i was use to coming from Carr.Fights everyday, gettin high, ditching, getting into trouble.i gotta say valley was a pretty fun experince,it kinda made me grow.If i had another chance though,id look valley in the eyes and do the best i could, its like a slap in the face to us fuck ups.i went to valley in 2007, valley may have calmed down over the yrs, but its like a cycle.

  14. VHS was clearly one of the best schools that would get you ready for life. All is true. The good and the bad. Good students up front, the rest of us in the back talking. Crowds were separated in gangs, race, crews, grades, GPA, and sports affiliation. Depending on the type of crowd you were hanging with, you were shielded from all else. 29. Back in 1980 I was sent to Santa Ana to stay with my father, who had moved there a year or two before. I attended Valley and found myself immersed in a whole different realm of experience and peer pressure than what I was used to in Michigan. To say the least, I got into my share of trouble, but not ANYWHERE near what I could have. I had to do the "continuation" for a bit for ditchin class. Met some beautiful, spoiled girls in that class... I even got into a fight in the hall one day. He hit me, I hit him. That was the end of it. It probably could have gotten worse, but it did'nt. It was a Somoan guy and one of his friends actually squashed it by getting us to start practicing for this little dance group they were puttin together. Anybody remember that from back in the 80's? We used have dance-offs in class. Guys used to play the "Dozens" back on the basketball courts. It was awesome for me. I remember sitting out in the parking lot one day and looking out over the trees and thru the smog and seeing this outline of these mountains I'd never "noticed" before. I watched them appear as if there was some artist with these pencils, and he was making these mountains right before my eyes. I soon came to realize that the whole city was surrounded by mountains. And that it was actually sitting in a "valley". I lie to you not. My father suggested to me one day that I look past the smog and the hustle and bustle. I was glad I did. I dated a girl by the name of Kelly Johnson. A short beautiful blonde young lady who was unsure of herself, but learning as each day wore on. Her friend Debbie. The boyfriend Reggie. I remember a young lady I was in choir with by the name of Patty. She had some older and younger brothers who were kewl as all out, but rough as hell. I remember that Valley was the LARGEST high school I had ever seen. I thought I was going to college. Security guards riding around on golf carts? What!? I was from Michigan. Outdoor cafeteria? What!? I loved it. Beautiful girls everywhere. Low riders. Beaches. Poppin and Wavin. The Dozens. Basketball. I played for the JV team. In choir. Helped with the Drama Club. Again, did the "Continuation" thing after school got out. What was up with that? That tripped me out, but, I met an awesome girl in that class who's name was Chris I believe. Beautiful California girl. Used to walk her back and forth from home to school and back. Yeah, I remember Valley. Heck, I was only there for ONE YEAR. One year! It was my best year of high school. Yeah, I can honestly say that. IT WAS MY BEST YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL.

i graduated last year in '07. my four years at valley where the best years ever. the only thing that i hated and i know that the rest of the class did, was the move to godinez. i really wanted to end my high school years at valleys just like my brothers did in '95 and '99.
valley is still know as the meanest school in orange county. tons of fights during first and second lunch. most of the fights where between the retarded taging crews(mos,sbk...).
other than the move and the retards(taging crews) my final year at valley hit the spot. best time ever.

Yes, I witnessed my share of fights, but in all my years at Valley (1985 to 1989)I remember the best times.... and those are the times that I cherish. BOO to those who say Valley is trouble lol...SAV Rocks! I enjoyed all the stories in this blog....

  34. I attended VHS from '69 - 73 and have fond memories of the Kangaroo Court - good times good times.

The violence unfortunately left an everlasting impression on me. I can remember one day by the outside lunch area there was a fight between two rival female groups. It was back in the day of the big afros and as the fight continued, the fros were flying off everyone's head!! I had no idea until then that the big hair was a big farce!

  36. Hi Steve,
I attended VHS in the early 90's. Violence, drugs, gangs, very typical back then. I remember a drive-by with the intended targets standing in front of the auditorium. I remember losing friends. I can't say that my memories are fond.

  38. Hi Steve,

I am a Santa Ana Valley alumni, class of '99. For me, school was a popularity contest on one hand and an academic competition on the other. See, I was one of the students still trying to find where I fit in. You could say I was in between geek and sheek (probably more on the geek side). But school was fun, I had great memories in tennis, badminton, journalism, ASB, AP classes, and other academic clubs.

Socially, there were gangs, cholos and asian gangs, but they all eventually got kicked out to the neighboring continuation school, or others got locked up. Otherwise, there were the schoolies, jocks, goth, rebels, the HS spirit type of people, and those who just wanted to get laid.

After graduation I went straight to UCI, but got pregnant and married. But none the less I was determined. Working full time in the day and going to school full time at night, and thanks to a supportive husband and family members, I graduated from CSUF with a Communications degree (college took a total of 5 years). Now I'm doing Marketing/Communications for an Irvine engineering firm.

So it doesn't matter how much your HS sucks as far as ranking. It's your ambitions and aspirations that take you as far as you want to go in life.

Anyway, holler at me if you want to be on the Class of 99's 10-year reunion committee. It's coming up next year!

P.S. I think valley is now a prep school now...or trying to be.

  40. I graduated from Valley in 1965. I had a wonderful high school experience. I was in drill team and froze my buns off in those short little uniforms at those cold football games. And what girl at Valley didn't have a crush on Mr. Kubas? Unfortunately he passed away in 2002. Steve Foote (class of '65) who was the keeper of the Valley Falcon (yes we had an actual bird) passed away last year. For the girls in the class of '66 that were looking for yearbooks, you might try contacting this site for your class. www.savhs68.com/default.htm Maybe someone will have a yearbook that they would copy for you.

  41. Here I am again...one year later and still reading the SA Valley blog. Wow!!! Has time changed since 1987. I like reading all the different experiences although similar it shows that we're all individuals. You can tell that a lot of us moved on to better and bigger things, then there are those who are still talking the slang and living in the hood (not that there is any thing wrong with that). I just want to say that home is where the heart is and my heart is in Santa Ana. I'm starting an Art Scholarship beginning with the class of 2009 and would like to encourage those that have moved on and have done well to give back to our high school and provide opportunities in the form of scholarships to those who want to go on to collage but don't have the funds. I wish all the SA Valley alumni and those that went there but didn't graduate from Valley..nothing but the best! Letty Del Val Class of 1987.

Paul Peters, Dion Evans, James Strong, James Barclay, and Chuck Steen will always be remembered as good friends and fellow teammates. Noble Franklin my track & field coach and mentor, if your reading this THANK YOU for giving me the tools that helped me grow on and off the field.

This present day I’m Gunnery Sergeant in the US Marines and stationed abroad. I did two combat tour's one on the ground and the other onboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

The Corps has been good to me and it’s an honor to serve my country. No other decision would have amount to the success I have achieved now. My accomplishments would not have been possible it was not for my family, teammates and friends from SAV.

Paul Peters, Dion Evans, James Strong, James Barclay, and Chuck Steen will always be remembered as good friends and fellow teammates. Noble Franklin my track & field coach and mentor, if your reading this THANK YOU for giving me the tools that helped me on and off the field.

Presently I’m Gunnery Sergeant in the US Marines and stationed abroad. I did one combat tour in Iraq and provided support for Operation Iraqi Freedom onboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. The Corps has been good to me and it’s an honor to serve my country. No other decision would have amount to the success I have achieved now. My accomplishments would not have been possible if it was not for my family, teammates, and friends from SAV.

  49. Hey,
I graduated from Valley class of 2006. I really hate how people look down on Valley. Valley is your typical highschool. Now and then you have your fights what school doesn't. You have your gays your straights, jocks, preppys, punks everyone is different. Every school has their good and bad students. Valley is great the teachers are awsome. I love Valley great memories I was your typical girl cheerleader for 3 yrs dated the football player. School was great. Senior patio awsome memories. Dances, pep rallys, football and basketball games. And our number person at school who is always at every game Twee!!

  51. Attending Valley from '76 to '79 was the best! At lunch, Mr. Lucas would let us play backgammon in the wrestling room listening to the best of old school, (Switch, Slave, Cameo, Brothers Johnson, etc) We kicked butt in basketball and football and to this day I still have the league championship game ball when we beat Villa Park! It's signed by the best of course, Dr. Clutchinstein, (Lionel Horne), Ricky Stokes, Albert Jones and the rest of the team.. I made 3 lifelong friends (although we lost one to a brain tumor last year.), and they are strong to this day 32 years later.. Valley will forever be woven into the person I am and now living in Louisiana, I can't put into words how much I miss Southern Cali...

  53. Hi, I graduated in 1973 from SAVHS
Most days I didn't want to be there because of the racial tension. I had a fovorite teacher named Mr. Booker. He was drafted to Viet Nam and I always wondered about him. He was great and I don't know if he knew that!
    Thanks all!

  55. My father, John Daywalt was the pricncipal of SAV in the 70's. My dad died in 1984 in his mid 40's. It was devastating. I am looking for memories any alumni might have of him. He was there during the Gary Templeton and Myron White days. I would love to share more stories with my own children. I was very proud of my father when he was pricipal there. He took me on campus and to football games. I was just a little girl. Any stories or memories of him would be so appreciated. Thank you!!

  57. Well reading the posted comments really brought back memories. I attended Valley High School from 86-88, until I had to go to Horizon High due to extensive ditching. Memories of walking to Taco Bell and Serrano's hanging at to bus stop on Greenville, to kill time! My brother was in DaBoys at that time so I can relate to you all from that time. Valley wasn't bad when I attended! Linda the security guard at Valley, chasing us! While trying to go to ditching parties! Anyone from that time email me at : monika.0617@hotmail.com

  58. WOW!Reading everyone's blog just brought back some good ol'memories.Friends that were made to friends we kept in touch to the ones we lost as well. Remembering Robert Brito (R.I.P)to Braulio Ramos to the Acosta Boys as well. To the Classy Ladies and the COMPS as well. How about the teachers we loved and hate (Debbie Hill to our fav Mrs. Stucky). How about the those pesty guys who hung out at the wall giving us girls a hard time. How about our own favorite security L.C and Linda. They were so cool. Where has those good times gone. Now its our kids turn to make memories of their own. Pleasant memories that we shall all treasure. By the way what happen to our Class of '87 reunion? If anyone knows anything please let me know.

  59. Hello VHS Alumni,

Michael Moss, it was a pleasure reading your blog! I have to say that I was pleased to learn that so many good things (people) came out of VHS. I attended VHS in 1981 – 1983 and later transferred to Saddleback. I have fond memories of both schools.

Before and after reading your blog, I came across those written by Big Dave, Star-C, Kavyn Finely and others that failed to leave a name but left traces of who they are. It’s good to see that we somehow find ways to keep in touch with each other.

I’m looking forward to that “Combined Class Reunion” that you spoke of earlier this year at the Black History Parade.

Thanks for taking the time to read my message.

  61. Valley! Wow! I attended from 1971-1974...graduated as a Junior...that tells you something about the school - it had some smart kids even way back then. Some of you may know me as I dated Bob Turley in his Junior year and my Junior/Senior year. I only saw one fight and that was my freshman year, the first day of school. Had a couple of girls "call me out" but they seemed to be afraid of a shy/quiet white girl...lol. I was also known for having written a letter to the editors of 2 newspapers back in 1974. The teachers were good and the counselors even better. +6I recall Jake and LC. One of my photos of Jake got printed in the 74 yearbook. Valley was an all-right school! No gang fights on campus and no race discrimination on the campus, but off campus was a whole new issue! I chose Valley High over Mater Dei and am glad I did!

Southside was deep, WestSide compadres was deep, We were deep, all subsets of Myrtle were deep, Dogtown was deep, 17th Street/5 Street was deep, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, Delhi was deep, Santa Anita was deep, and really there are too many too list. Anyhow...cruising down Bristol was cool...still is, but I eventually did time and now I live in Sacramento... I have gone back recently to Orange County and it has considerably cleaned up. The 3 strikes law has cleaned up a lot of things. Even flower and main look nice these days... But it was somewhat fun... Sorry i caught this blog so late.. Just shooting cletcha...

savhs is what you make it. you can come out however you want, an affiliated member, a scholar overall a better figure for the community. vhs was tough in its own way. i remember playing sports after school there growing up and it was tough for people who went there although as the years past the true made figures started depreciating. less and less people had a mind, instead deep pockets that extended from there parents. now you have a bunch of none self-proclaimed people but a bunch of spoiled brats that need to get teased as the alumni did back in the day. what happened to the sickside of vhs, it faded away as the years went by . . .

  70. Hello All! I teach at VHS now and just wanted to let everyone know that because it is the schools 50th anniversary A LOT of things will be happening and you should all try to attend. The Homecoming Game will be on Sat. Oct 18, 2008 at the Santa Ana Bowl at 4pm. There will also be a pancake breakfast that morning. We are also trying to put together a "2nd Prom" for the 50 years of alumni. I am heading that up, but it is VERY difficult to find any alumni because the school does not have an alumni databaase. If there are certain websites your class has or you just happen to know a lot of alumni please contact me! We are trying to reach as many people as possible. ALSO, if anyone is interested in buying the 50th anniversary yearbook please contact me. We will be including pictures from all of the years past.

Also, if any of you alumni out there have cool jobs or just cool stories that our kids could relate to I would love to hear from you. So many of our kids just lack direction. They are all so smart and so capable, but they need rolemodels and mentors to look up to. They need to see that going to Valley is not necessarily a bad thing.

I can be reached by email @ misscostello@yahoo.com
For yearbook info you can email valleyhighyearbook@gmail.com

  72. whats up people, i went to valley 84-87 and i have nothing but good memories from those days. i was in the marching band and it was pretty cool how we went on alot of parades and field show competitions. Mrs. Jay was our band teacher then we had Mimi Dominguez they were both cool people. we always traveled with the tall flags. its a time i wish i could live all over again.i remember we threw a party the night before a competition at Kyle's house and everyone got so shitfaced. we were all hungover the next morning icluding the tall flags. Olivia, Jenny, the twins, Veronica, Marcela (to name a few)Mrs Jay was furioius cause people were throwing up and some couldnt perform. i remeber that when we were out on the field performing, if i am not mistaken it was Huey the bass drummer passed out on the field. it was so damn funny. but those were the days. (Band members) Tali, Lee Gasu, Sergio Perchez, Paul Peters, Paul Vargas, Lucio Hernandez,Ivan and Omar Dominguez, Alfred Goodman, Marcel(RIP),Jerry Salgado(my bro.),Doug Johnson, Steve and Stefany Ybarra, Norma, Hiromi, John Hardy, Kyle, Laura, Ron, and forgive me for not mentioning everyone if anyone can name the ones i missed please do so. but all these people in the band and tall flags made my high school days memorable. thank you all. 74. I was in the 1986 graduating class ... Yes there were fights (I remember when the water polo team pick on a Vietnamese kid and got here but kicked by a group of Vietnamese gang kids, of course they were saved by the us football players & track team) ... Yes there were gangs F- Troop and many more...

But I remember good times like smoking a fatty in the shower with of the auditorium naked with a girl cause Mr Soto made me take drama and I was a football player not an actor but I need to pass his english class. (Which I was so high I grabbed my crotch after play during intro's and brought the house down.

Or hanging out with the C.O.M.P.s (Cool Order Music Productions) they threw the best skip parties!!!! Their mascot was Capitan Crunch which they spray painted on the street in front of the school.

Or when me and a friend borrowed 2 giant bags of dead frogs from science class and threw them in the halls and girls bathroom during class change .. lol

I loved my experience there... wish I could connect with old friends ... now I'm in Ft Lauderdale FL with nothing but great memories

  76. Steve,

I graduated in 1971 from Valley and had a great education which laid the foundation to a successful life. I played football for Dick Hill and Billy Mills. I am truly old-school. I owe my success to Valley; Chief of Police, Army Reserve Colonel, University Professor, and a Jurist Doctorate Degree. Thank you Russ Bogie, Dick Hill, Mike Rush, Ed Adams, Richard Kirwan, Ed McGuckin, Mike Andrade, and the entire faculty at the time.

  77. Hi Steve.
I graduated from Valley in 1981 and I'm very proud to be a Falcon. I was also a Carr Astro. Valley Had the greatest teachers and mix of students anywhere. Color was not an issue compared to what goes on today. Crack club was the best bunch of pranksters around! I remember when they threw out the plucked chicken at a basketball game! Our track team went undefeated from 78-81, my 4 years there. Jerome Candidate taught Jeffrey Daniels of Shalamar how to moon walk and HE got Gerome together with Michael Jackson and the rest is history...that's why Gerome (AKA Casper) is in some of Michael's videos. I remember having lunch in the chemistry room and Homecoming's Kangaroo Court was hilarious! Lucky the security guard used to slap the back of our heads when we were wrong and LC would use his cart to take us to the Eskimo where they had THE BEST fries PERIOD! Coach Stewart would eat our lunches at the track meets but it didn't stop us from winning. There were some fights, but not too many and those few were over pretty quickly. For me Valley was great. Nothing was sugar-coated and if you took advantage of the faculty's knowledge you came away prepared for your next step in life. My best memories come from Valley and they will stay with me forever. My parents still live on Center street so I still see the surroundings from time to time. things have changed but Valley will forever make my heart bleed Blue and Gold.
Take care, Jesse Johnson Class of 81, Track Captain.

  78. boy, do we digress..
lets get this back on track.
Valley High School was just like any other high school. It had sex, drugs, and wrap/hip hop/rock and or roll/r&B/ punk/reggae/.
I remember it being the most diverse environment I can remember. 79-82,, I would not have changed my experience for the world, otherwise I would not have what I have today. Sure there were gangs. show me a city without gangs, and I will show you a talking horse. YOu were either in it, above it, around it,, it was your choice,, well sometimes.. Funny, I do have my own stories of gun play and fights, but open a newspaper and we were not alone. Today,, Valley High is a great community, same as Santa Ana High, just go out any evening and see the families walking the track or playing sports(soccer mostly).. Now thats community. YOu sometimes dont even see that in upscale hoods..
So community is where its at.. I think someone said that in this blog somewheress..
    Go Falcons

  81. Hi
I graduated from Valley High this
past June C/O '08. Valley was really enjoyable my freshmen, sophomore, and junior year; my senior year unfortunately was not the greatest. Many of our dances were post poned, we had no spirit whatsoever. I dont recall seeing any violence through out the school. It was a pretty laid back school. Many people assume Valley is so ghastly and treacherous and it is not!!! Also not everyone at Valley is ghetto. I have many awesome memories from Valley. I do not regret atteding Valley. I had the best four years of my life. And i met some of the most hip friends anyone can have.

  87. Glad the school is better now!

There have been several annonymous posters here. One accused Steve of lying! The one I am looking at dated 01/12/2008 says there was very little violence.

My goodness. My husband and I met at SAVH home of the Falcons in the summer of 68. The school had a mix of the white academic minded kids, the jocks, who were both black and white, the nerds, and social dropouts of the 60s, but it also had its good share of gangs and racial blacks against whites violence.

We both graduated from Valley in 69 and 71. We saw black racial tensions and race riots and fight after fight. Mexicans would jump in. And even whites and Jocks would jump in.

Dont give me any bull about what a great school it was during my years.

My high School was on the news so freqently I was ashamed to go there. I did not fit into any of the afore named groups. I was a loner. who kept a decent grade average for a while.

If it werent for the teachers who hung in there and devoted themselves to their vocation and saving the lives of the kids who did care, I would have dropped out and run away.

Dorothy Jerrauld, Mr. Bogie, Coach Hill, Vickie Halatsis, Counselor, Mrs, Lund, Mrs Doolittle in the Library, Mr McGuckin, Yes there were good people. But the times were horrid. I am glad that some kids got out of there unstained.

And we wont discuss Mr Killips and why he was allowed to drw blood from Carl Fields younger Brother and still remain a teacher. But I guess one crazy teacher isnt so bad. By the way. There were most wonderful african americaan black or hispanic kids who attended Valley during those years also. I remember them fondly.

Maybe if as a kid, your name was Griset you could make it. Mine wasnt. Maybe somehow, you did just fit in and nothing bothered you. I couldnt. The tension there did bother me. And I was afraid. I was afraid to walk home.

God bless the teachers who tried. God help the kids now grown who failed. And for those who still live with their head in a cloud, well, glad you can do it, sorry for your family though. Head in the clouds living makes for very bad relationships.

PS Husband and I, well, we are still together after all the violence, and the ugliness of those years. My saving grace was that guy, moving away a few times, and God. If it werent for God,coming back to SAVH after my husband graduated would have meant giving up.

PS #2 I was attacked by a crowd of black girls on my grad day while I WAS ALL ALONE in B bldg. My little sister was attacked at Smedley/Carr. she was robbed and roghed up tough not severely beaten, her money was taken, and she was terrified. Glad the school is better now!

    Diane

  94. Peace,
I graduated from Valley in 72' I went to school with Temp (Gray Tempilton)and played football and basketball. I read the comments above and made me remember the store down the street. I was not from California but enjoyed the whole culture of the area. We kick ass in football. I'm Black and had good friends that were Mexican and party good with them. The car clubs and "F" troop was just jumping off. We (Black and Mexicans) got along well from my point of view. I remembered watch Gray (Temp) hitting baseballs over the fence on to Ratt street at practice. Veron Clark was one standup guy, along with a guy named Bobby Williams. I had a good time at Valley and some of my friends were thugs, but cool with me.I lived in the Voltair apartments on of McFadden and hung out at the center, rough crowd down that way. I left Valley May 72 and went to Viet Nam in Aug 72.
I wish all of the above people Peace and Bobby Williams who passed away last year rest in Peace.

As for the gangs and viloence that so many of you chose to "champion" in your comments. What difference did it really make.

After all these years I still have, and will always have the education I received Valley. I will bet you gang types no longer control anything, and you never really did.

Hail to all the rest of you who enjoyed your years and appreciated the school, you are the true Falcons! Sants Ana Valley High School offered me a good path of life and I gladly took it!

  98. Steve, I attended SAV, now known as Valley HS from 1971 to 1975. We had a winning track team, CIF champion Football team, and a good basketball team. People like Rick Walker and Garry Templeton were in school at that time. We can boast of professional atheletes, attorneys, doctors, law enforcement, nuns, school administrators, business managers and more. We had some fights, but when I was there we fought against others not with each other. In 1975 there was a LA black gang member that came to campus and assaulted a hispanic football player, and some of the black football players came to his rescue. At lunch that day all of the football team and the coaches were out at lunch as a show of pride and force, little did we players know at that time the police presence blocks away surrounding our campus. Our teachers were dedicated professionals, we were all a cohesive group and there was mutual respect for ALL the students and faculty members.

  99. What's up? My name is Rudy Arellano and we are starting an "Alumni Help Valley High School" thing. It started with a visit to Valley High. My son wanted to see the old school. They went to athletics department to check it out. He was talking to the Athletics Director at the school and they are in need of funds for their department. They have been using the same old torn shorts, shirts and other equipment they use for the program for a few years now. They wanted to have the parents help out by donating $50.00 to help out, but they received little response. As I was talking to my friend who also went to SAV, he and I agree. When we went to Valley they never asked our parents for money. If the school needed money for what ever the cause we would do a car wash, sell candy or something. Times are rough for all schools of California. So we started a small thing by trying to gather donations for Valley High School athletics department. There is no embarrassment on the amount due these hard times. I am giving a little. As you know were not rich but I believe as most of you do that, I had the best time of my life at Valley High. If you would like to help. Whatever you like is fine. A little goes a long way. Email so I can give out more info. I am going at this Raw. I'm kind of pumped up on this. I have never felt like this before or maybe I didn't care. I care now! Maybe I'm just getting to be an old fart. See what you can do to help. Give the Alumni my Email rudy5784@att.net. I am going to have all the donations recognized by Valley High School to all of the Alumni that helped out. Tell everybody this no scam, just help for our Santa Ana Valley High School. Thank You!

  101. Okay! Enough of the hood rat comments. The real tragedy is 'Luigi's' Italian restaurant ran by a old Chinese guy. I'm class of '90 and I lived on Stanford near the bend in the street where Stater bros. is. One day I was craving their meatball sandwich and there was a girl behind the counter! I asked where is the old guy and she said that he was her uncle and she purchased the business from him. So I thought what the hell she's family. WRONG...the food was terrible and it's now out of business.

  103. Responding to Class of 73.
Class of 75 here, I know now that there were some 'human' teachers that were not just about teaching academia. My personal experience was very positive. A few of those that were GREAT in my opinion were; Mr Staudenbaur, Mrs Halatsis, Mr Chamnes, Mr Bayati Coach Fisher, Coach Hill, Coach Adams Coach Raugawitz, and Mr Zimmer. I am sure there are others that you all can give honorable mention to.

  108. Hello everyone,

I went to Monte Vista Elementary School, then onto Carr Jr. High and then I had the pleasure of attending SAV 81-83.
I did not see the gangs and fights that people are writing about. I was on the wrestling team. I was a jock if you will. I have fond memories of my years at SAV. I went through school with: Norman, Rabbit, Elliot, Joey, the Medina sisters, Norma S. Eugenia, Bertha, Loretta , Irene, Thien, Gerald, Glenn, all of my teammates and many more.

I remember sitting on the brick wall that was located next to the student store, south of the lunch tables. Sitting there watching everyone walk on by in between the periods and lunch. The best part about my days there was the wrestling room. Coaches Willie Williams & John Lowell were great, all the hard work we put into preparing for the wrestling matches. Fogging up the mirrors in the wrestling room was a great indication of our hard work. I attended several of the football games and then went to the Pizza Hut, there I saw some drug activity, but they made their own choice, I stayed clear of that stuff.

I did not graduate with 84’, but I got my GED and then went on to wrestle at Cypress College and got my education. Today, I enjoy looking back at those wonderful years.

  110. I went to SA Valley from 76-78. I would have graduated in the class of '80 but we moved to Oklahoma. I am alway's trying to find old friends from Valley. I loved that school. It did have a bad rep. but I don't think it was all that bad. I also remember Kangaroo court and spirit week. Two teachers that stand out for me is Mr. Lammers and Mr. Hahn oh and Mr. Lucas! Would love to re-connect with some old classmates! Class of 80!!

  111. Unfortunately i never got to make the class of 07 due to my personal misfortune and my decision to drop out but Valley, as ghetto as it appeared, was really my home. I lived in a broken house with a family that trailed, not far behind, the verge of destruction. I feel that a lot of people had problems like me and found a second family behind those gates. The same gates that held us in as prisoners. I know that after 12pm, after we've seen all our friends, we wanted out and the first chance security wasn't on the watch, we ditched. One of the things i did not like was the promotion of the gay and lesbian alliance that was adapted in my freshman year there, which i believe was 2004. Other than that, it was all good. By the way, does anyone know a Priscella O?

  114. Bernabe Alvarez,

Hello there falcons!. i just graduated this yr wohoo CLASS OF 09!, i will miss Valley. well i attended CARR INT. graduated from it in 2005, (looking for a CARR 05 YR book willing to pay benny_virus@hotmail.com)

When i was an 8th back in 05 i remember valley use to still have several GANGS & KREWS cause i knew friends from them. When i first enrolled Valley in 2005 i remember SouthSide, Golden West, DelHi, Ftroop, Lopers, Wanders, Dukes, n Sullivan St still n sum krew bangs MABk, SMSk, MOSk, 2MSk, SBk. There use to be alot of fights back in those days. i also remember alots of party krews! dat use to be cool all those ballers with them big Flyers pendants and their nos tanks. Lots of fights still were being held in the Handball courts, sadly they were brought down when valley was remodeled in 2007.

My Sophomore valley was moved to GODINEZ and used the brand new school as VALLEY WEST HS While valley was remodeled, there wasnt as many fights as my freshmen most gangs ended there. all was left in 2007 was KREW BANGERS. MOS, SMS n all i mentioned. Lots of GRAFFITI STARTED in this year. that was most of the problem at valley pretty much n sum VIolence but not as bad, most valley happened outside campus at Parties and the streets of SA. This was the last year of Party krews. HYPED UP ENT, AIR HEADS, BLUE CHUCKS, IN YOUR MOUTH, ... others. people w NOS. THIS WAS MY BEST YEAR OF ALL TIMES BEST PARTIES EVER NO DRAMA< FOOTBALL GAMES< LOTS OF SPIRIT. I hang around with class of 08 n i was 09, we created a social krew {no violence related} NERD KLAN we were known all around campus, YEAH! our social krew was known cause during lunch we would invite lots of people to kick it, WHITES, ASIANS, BLACKS, LATINOS we had all different kind of people in our KLAN.

MY JR in 2008,Lots of 08 class went to Lauren Grisit due to lack of graduation credits. lots of poeple still had the spirit from previous years and this was the last year valley had NICE SPIRIT. LOTS of POD Smokers. lil bit of kerws still round. NERD KLAN trew an unexpected party that EVERYONE LOVED THIS YEAR AHAH it was soo cool. unfortunately right when the party ended there was a driveby and one person got staved. WON BEST DANCE PERFORMANCE in STARSEARCH.as "WILD STYLE"

My senior YEAR was alright I enrolled in ASB as the commissionaire of TECHnology always wanted to play the music for school lol. and so I did. Valley wasnt the same like the previous years it was more boring lots of people didnt want to participate in school activities or going to games as much as back in da days. NO spirit what so ever. it was kind of dead. I WON PROM KING xD. also WON STARSEARCH TROPHIE AS LOVED BY AUDIENCe as :"Expression"

So much to say..but oh well G2g

  119. Reading alot of the comments let's me know just how old I am. Not many people from the 70's what are we all dead? Some of you need to go back to school and learn how to write basic grammer. LOL Yea I too suffer from Valley Education. One thing I will confrim Valley did have it's troubles and did have a bit of a reputation, but I would not trade my times at Valley for nothing. Let me express on some of the positives that Valley has produced. We had many people come out of Valley that was successful. Do you remember Garry Templeton, Rick Walker, Karl Denson, Melvin Davis, The Bordeaux Brothers (Derek & Byron) The Wings just a small list & I left out many. Some teachers Mr. Booker, Mr. Butler, Mrs. Sampson (Boy was she tough as well as Mrs. Whitaker), Coach Hill, Coach Musick, Coach Steward & Brumsey. The experience at Valley was still considered family in my eyes. I had great relatioships with the teachers & numerous alumini. We were consider as a Athletic power when I was there being competitive in all sports especially football, baseball, track, etc. The athletes were our secondary security, on campus so no one messed with Valley, not even the Crips. We also had several different social groups BSU, MECHA, The Surfers, we all were cool with each other and got along. The ethnic make up was quite deverse, with all groups of people there. So those of there now create your own legacy & enjoy the Valley Falcon experience because after high school life becomes serious. Looking for any 70's peeps especially Karen Tucker (Cheerleader) or Leona Autor. Hit me at Playboy@pacbell.net to find out who. Go falcons !!!!

  124. Sorry to read about some of the negative years Valley has gone through from some students' perspectives. I graduated 1963. At that time we were very proud of our school. Lots of school spirit. We always had big turnouts for our football games and lots of successful students, even though we weren't all goody two shoes. Haven't been back in years but just went to the 50-year reception. I was impressed with the young people I met. Did I miss something.

Went to the football homecoming game the next day. Our team won but I was disappointed how few students attend. The band was very good but very small in number. Don't know about the academic status of our students, but maybe its time for some of you to become mentors at our old high school

  126. Hey Steve and other fellow Valley High Alum,

I attended Valley between 1996-2000 and I am proud to have don the blue and gold.

Unlike the 80s, there wasn't much with regards to violence. Sure there was the occasional fist fight and yes we (the baseball guys) had our beef with the greasers/rebels students and spirit week did force most freshmen to hide but not much came from that.

Instead we concentrated on having fun and not necessarily within the boundaries of school campus. If not in class or on the baseball field then chances are that we were either at a nearby friend's house, beach or probably even at Knott's Berry Farm.

Among the countless memories of Valley, the one that stands out the most is when good friend and baseball teammate Armando Briseno drowned when pulled in by a rip tide on May 18, 2000 at Newport Beach. A small group of us planned to either skip period 5 or meet up right after class (block class schedule called for periods 1, 3 & 5 for the day). An earlier beach trip on Monday was spoiled by cold and windy weather. Due to a last minute change in my plans I was not able to attend the beach trip but three others, including Armando did. That was the last time we would see him alive.

His passing came a day before our Senior Prom and a month before graduation. A group of us had big plans for both events and a post-graduation trip.

As you can imagine, the story of his passing made headlines and stirred up a local media frenzy. Given the timing of his passing, his story made for a "juicy" or interesting and sad story.

There was also a Santa Ana High School which was on the other side of town, our rivals of course. Our school was good at almost everything it strived for. We had a good football teams, water polo, bothe men's and women's tennis teams, etc. I do wish things could stay the way they were but times changes everything. At least those who went to SAVHS in the 60's had a great school to go to and to graduate from as well. The great blue and gold......go FALCONS

  145. Born in Santa Ana and went to Santa Ana High. Grad. in 75 but remember plenty of violence. Was chased several times by Delhi and F Troop gangs that were looking for something to do. One day had to dive under a truck to aviod bullets of two rival gangs going at it on Orange street on the way home from school. Three friends and one cousin killed by gang activity. One shot in the neck, one chained in the head, one stabbed to death and one pushed off of a water Tower. There used to be regular Police barracades at Main st. downtown S.A. on Friday nights. Cruising was popular then and so were drive by shootings just starting. The problem I had was if you had a beef with a Chicano you had to fight his whole gang at the same time instead of the mono e mono.
About 100,000 illegal alien Mexicans entered Orange County during the 70's and the whole culture changed not only in neighborhoods but in school. I felt like I was transformed into another country over night, trying to learn spanish instead of foreigners learning English. I'll be honest I had to deal with the temptation to be resentfull of Mexicans but half of my closest friends were of Mexican decent but born or a citizen of the US and I married a woman who's parents were from Mexico. I also know the power of forgiveness but that doesn't make wrong right. Mexico is hypocritical to thier comments on Arizona's law, look hat the way they treat foreigners in thier country. If you go there you are required to pay for your own helathcare, have your own income, you can't change the color of your neighborhood too much by your family (skin) and you can be thrown in jail for 2 years if anyone asks you for your papers and you don't produce them. Much more than this folks.. wake up! Something needs to be learned here and it isn't diversity, it's honoring America's uniqueness and birth along with it's foundational
origins. Slavery is not worth throwing the baby out with the bathwater to our beginning if you honestly look at all nations and thier history including Mexico. Mexicans today are killing Indians in the San Carlos Mountains over economics of alcohol. Now several gangs exist of all races and people think everything is going well? Their is an answer to the gang problem but it isn't what we were doing then or what we are doing now. Its preaching the Gospel nonstop... and then using a few words if necessary. In other words your actions! Anon.

  147. I attended Diamond Elementary, McFadden Jr. High (because Smedley was a DANGEROUS place to be) and Valley. I was at Valley from '72 through '74. I was there and attended the Kangaroo Court you mentioned in the original post. I don't remember the guy's name off the top of my head, but I could go to my yearbook and find it. He was a defensive lineman. He was very big and very strong. His girlfriend was even taller than him. They were both the sweetest people you'd ever want to meet. The premise was that he was judged to be the best defensive player on the football team and that they wanted to see how offensive he could be. They blindfolded him and told him they were going to bring three different girls out one at a time and he was to kiss them and decide who was the best kisser. Everyone thought it was hilarious until they brought the first girl out. She was old enough to be his mother. They kissed. She left and came right back. She came out a total of three times and each time they kissed like there was no tomorrow. He was having a great time until his blindfold was removed and he saw who he had been kissing. It was his mother. I think it was probably the most traumatic experience of his life. The entire school was subdued for the rest of the day, except for one little jerk who followed him around for the rest of the day teasing him unmercifully. He finally had all he could take and with one punch knocked that kid out.
I remember the store up on Greenville. In my day it was Cliff & Maudies.
The whole time I lived in the neighborhood, starting in 1961 it was a scary place to live. My parents finally moved out when they got a pattern of bullet holes from a fully automatic rifle across the front of their house.
I still drive through the neighborhood on occasion. Not all my memories are bad, but I do believe a whole bunch of you are looking back through rose-colored glasses.

  149. I'm from the class of 1965 SAV, the (3) yrs at Valley brought a lot of joy to me. The Friday nite football games; pizza at Me & Eds after the game, was a great time to grow up. (6) months later I found myself in Danang Vietnam wondering If I ever get back to Santa Ana. Love life to the fullest for you never know when someone or something will come along and take your breath away. Falconolgy 101.

  151. Hello Santa Ana Valley Alumni, I graduated in '73.
I was fortunate enough to get a good education at Valley and have a very positive experience attending Valley. Some of the things I have read in this blog are Sad, some suprizing, and some offer hope. First of all I would like to apologize to all my classmates that were afraid to go to school or who experienced violence while at school. I apologize for not supporting you more and being the kind of classmate who would allow you to be victimized. What is suprizing is the additudes of those alumni who's primary focus was not on learning and growing but to cause harm to others and not take advantage of publicly funded education, in my opinion only a fool or someone lacking parental guidance would squander such a precious gift. Also, to all of those wonderful teachers and staff over the years thank you from me and thank you from all the retobates that you have had to deal with over the years, may God bless you and keep you. To all current and future alumni, Remember Valley high school and schools like it are part of and grand experiment which was designed to provide quality education for the masses. From the very beginning the Rich and elite have been against this form of public education, and those of us who only attend to tear it down are only supporting the same folks who are against public education in the first place. So to all of you gangbangers and thugs out there YOU are only helping those who would deny YOU the opportunities that would help your families and your community to so selfishly squander and piss away an opportunity like this is like pissing
down the necks of everyone who came before you. But please don't be offended well just move the money from the school budget to the prison budget. To all the, current and future alumni YOU Matter, Always try your best, if theres something in life you want go after it with passion, do not allow the thugs and lost souls of the world to convince you that violence and thuggery is normal or good or that it will lead to anything but addiction, disease, prison, early death.

Those that know me, will know who wrote this, Mrs. Stucky Mr. Bernard, Coach Raugawitz,Coach Dick Hill and many others. Shout out to Tommy Fields, Rick Walker and Lew Sanders and many others.
Holding it down in the OC, DON'T MESS WITH MY OLD SCHOOL! PEACE OUT

  152. From John Went to SAV 61-64. I played football, basketball, and baseball. Loved being a Falcon. You were right we were really good in football all three of my years. I remember most the friendship, and the school spirit. Things were much simpler then. Then, the world seem to change with President Kennedy's assassination in 63. I still remember being at nutrition and my head began to spin. Although stunned my senior year, I looked to the future. Always a Falcon!

  154. I attended Santa Ana Valley High School from 1975-1976 and was the 9th of 11 Alaman's to graduate from that school. I have fond memories of "Spirit Weeks" that the youth of "Today" could only dream of. Kangaroo Court, Valley Villa, Plastics Classes, Cood Shop, Drafting, Choir, Madrigal Singers, VHS Band. I remember going to my brothers football games back in the mid 70's when the "Drill Team" had those big cascade hair pieces and wore dark blue velvet dresses. I remeber the Spririt Suckers. I remember those giant cinnimon rolls at breakfast and the mystery meat in the burritos - It was ALL GOOD.
I feel sorry for those of you who focus on the negative - Even the Brady's and the Partridges had some bad times.

  155. Hello Fellow Valley Alums,
I graduated in '75 and was class president. Our school had a reputation for being tough, but truthfully we had a wonderful group of students and faculty. Mr. Staudenbaur rest his soul was my chemistry and physics teacher. He could dish it out and take it too. The difference is we knew how to give respect, and therefore we received respect back. We had a championship football team, track team and did well in basketball and baseball. Our Atheletic Director Dick Hill was phenomenal and a man who believed in the power of prayer. Valley was a place where the surfers, low riders, jocks and nerds all got along. I know because I hung out or was a part of all of them. Don't sell the tradition of Valley short, we had people go on to higher education, professional sports, medical and technical field and become entertainers.

Hello Falcons! I loved reading some of the wonderful memories from the 70's graduating classes, for sure cinnamon rolls in the morning!I ate those after my early morning workout. I attended from 76 thru 79. I was very involved in Student Counsel, School Clubs, Falcon Night Life..."Rec Nite", Basketball & Football Games, Dances, Falcons getting together for a party, just meeting up at Valley on the weekend for a game of tennis, racketball or handball. Some of us would go to Calvery Chapel Concerts Saturday nights, remember Mustard Seed Faith... it was awesome to meet there. I had friends in every graduating year, teachers that would let us hangout with them between classes or at lunch. Teacher's were funny, too many to list. Yep, I was even up on that "Kangaroo Court" stage...I think our class of 79 was the last Kangaroo Court. I'd help the cheerleaders with their posters, decorating the Santa Ana Bowl/Stadium, stuffing paper into the chain link fencing to spell out Falcons, selling spirit ribbons. I earned a "Lifetime Pass" to any Valley athletic event, lettered Varsity 7 times to earn it, proud to be on the SA Valley cross country and track teams. We had awesome athletes at Valley! Athletes that didn't have the equipment that todays athletes have...but they had Falcon Pride. The schools student body was so cool, everyone hanging out with whoever they wanted because most everyone got along. Sure there were some ugly fights, especially one I remember two girls from a gang, one girl bashing the others head into the curb, yep, it was ugly. I yelled at the football guys to get over there and break it up before security even got there. The security guys were cool, doing their job but being cool about alot of stuff. School spirit, pride, respect, friendships, teachers, we cared about not only the school but each other. I will always be proud to be a Falcon of the 70's! I did organize our 10year reunion and helped on the 20year reunion committee...sorry I couldn't organize the 30th, I hope to do something for our 35th. Check with SA Valley HS in 2014, i'll leave info there.
mabel cornelius durand...yes, I married my high school sweetheart!...lol... love you randy!

  157. Wow! Hi fellow Falcon Alums - I'm Susan, Class of '80. It's actually very exciting to see that this 'thread' has been going for about four YEARS! I was born in L.A. and grew up in S.A. (from 3 months old) going to Monte Vista, Spurgeon and then Valley. I played tennis on the team all 4 years and got a good education. Yes, Santa Ana as a WHOLE is/was a bit dangerous. Let's not brow beat Valley.

Interesting thing that I remember is that gang bangers were actually polite to Elders (parents) in the neighborhood - maybe I'm being naive, but I do remember some of them saying hello to my Mother and Father by surname - i.e. Hi Mr...Hi Mrs...

Valley was an interesting place - in the late 70's - 80's, In my 4 years there I only remember one fight on campus between two girls - probably over some dude. The campus was closed by then - though some of us snuck out for lunch. There WERE a lot of security guards, but people got along. Actually - I read at that time the school was racially divided almost equally between Blacks, Whites, Mexicans & Asians. There was a huge influx of South East Asians in response to the Vietnam War into So Cal and to me we all got along.

Valley laid down a great educational foundation for those who chose to take advantage - much to the chagrin of the rest of affluent OC. I graduated and went to UC Berkeley, my older brother went to Stanford, classmates went to LB State, Fullerton, USC, Cornell, UCLA, MIT, Harvard - and we're all Black kids! We all graduated - I'm an architect. There are engineers, journalists, doctors etc. etc. etc. And, some of the 'bangers' of the early years have turned their lives around and are not in jail - believe it or not.

Is it all because of SAV? Who knows, but it was a great ride! Thanks to the late Mr Staudenbauer who taught all science like a champ - and always wanted the girls' tennis team to beat Santa Ana because he didn't want to hear crap from his daughter! I paraphrase...Mr Vincent who was one of the best math teachers I ever had. Mrs Langham, a fantastic English teacher! There are so many more, who I can see in my mind's eye, but can't name (no year book handy).

And to the Fantastic Songleaders of the 79-80 year: Cherol, Daphne, Alicia, Michel, Marie, Jacqui & Me! GO FALCONS! And if she reads this - my friend Ginger L. - cheerleader, class of '80! V! V-I! V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!

  158. So what happened to the 1989 class reunion? I would love to see all the people that I hung out with and partied with. I just saw Cheerios out at the OC fair and he looks the same as he did in the 80's when he passed out fliers on Main Street(although he seemed a little weird). Anyhow, 'zup to the Royal Lads, Sweet Mistresses, The Precious Jewels, Maneuver Ladies, and Romeo Boys. Hello to all the peeps that played JV baseball in 1986 and 1987. May the memories of Aqua Net, wine coolers (remember the Bartles and James commercials?), house parties, creepers, new wave, old school/high energy, GQ style, and mullets live on!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  161. Went through as the second class to attend all three years when the school was brand new and the roughest thing about it was gym class. I graduated in 1964 and then attended and graduated from UCLA before going on to graduate school and later medical school. I took my wife back to that area in 2004 and was amazed at the degradation and was looking for chalk outlines for bodies. Metal detectors on all the halls...No wonder a good basic education is out of reach to most people having to fear for your life and what should be one of the safe havens you attend each day.......Too bad not only the city the state, and even the country are moving or rather GALLOPING toward third world status...Ashamed as it just is not necessary

  162. I went by the school a few years ago and was saddened as to what I found....It looked akin to an inner city ghetto area....Ashamed good memories there and where I met my late wife

  163. To all SAVHS Alum, and CRACK CLUB. I would like to wish you and your family Happy Holidays.

Class of 81, we saw the ending of the 70's and the begining of the 80's. We all came from different ethnic backrounds and living conditons we all remember in Santa Ana.

We have different memories that we all love to remember. Sitting on the curb in front of the house under a street light on warm Santa Ana nights, playing Pop Warner football at Memorial Park then going swiming later, also playing Little League baseball in vairous locations around the Santa Ana area.

We all knew of the gang and drug related issues at Valley. But we also knew the repetition the sports department that Valley had. Momories of other students that walked the halls before us, from A-wing to D-wing, to the hard wooden seats in the auditorium.

Congatulation to the students (grads, and nongrads) that are succesfull in bussness, family, sports, television, and milatary service.

And we all can't forget, that yearly tradition of spelling out the graduating class in student bodies.

So what I am trying say is, that we all have are memories of Santa Ana Valley High School and the neighborhoods around the school. Some good, some sad.

My fondest memories I have, are playing football with good friends in the street at midnight, egging houses, tolet papering the school, ditching school, and being part of the CRACK CLUB. We knew we just wanted to have fun.

  169. I did not attend valley high, but I dated a girl named Alam (1963-1964). I did something foolish and she broke up with me. She never spoke to me again and I never had the chance to tell her how sorry I was. She did not know that the next day I was going to ask her to marry me. She was the love of my life and I was too stupid to see it. So after all these years I hope she see this. I would just like to say, I am so sorry for hurting you! Bob

  170. I'm from the class of '68..........the best year of committed, friendly, fun party people, alumni ever. It's interesting reading all these comments about a school that was a great place. Yes, every school has it's up's and down's and groups that like to call themselves gangs, but these people are the ones that don't really want to go to school, want to be big shots, the so called tuff guys that will never turn out to be anything anyway. Our school was more than that, it was a great place. We had a great football team, cheerleaders who were out of the way friendly to everyone, a great band, great outside activities like clubs, choir and many other things that most of us enjoyed and took pride in. Not like those "gang" people that only wanted attention and then it was the wrong kind. They should have paid more attention to the good things that they could have left school with instead of all the bad memories. But NO, they couldn't go to the football games, that would have made them look untough.....LOL, what a joke. Anyway, getting back to the school. I went to Diamond, Jackson, Smedley and Santa Ana Valley High School, and eventually Santa Ana College as well as a couple other ones and I am so happy to have gone there. Great memories like getting an ice cream on the way home with my friends, again the football games, after game parties and reunions. And I am happy to say even after all these years, OUR glass has summer get togethers and reunions and have had them since graduation, because our class was a close knit class and still is and I beleive it was because of our school spirit and friendships that we made during those years. Thanks to the ones who still try and keep us together doing the summer get togethers and reunions. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!! We appreciate you, whoever does this for our class.

  184. I went to Valley in 86 before my parents got divorced and I had to move (to lake arrowhead / rim of the world high school). Before Valley, we lived in lily white AZ. To say the transition was culture shock was an understatement. I sure did make me have a new respect for being the "minority".

I was part of the Frosh / JV Water Polo team and remember the fight KenW was talking about with the Vietnamese kids on the basketball court. I also remember the principal interuppting our water polo practice to discuss the activities of the "Bonez Fun Club", just after they spread plastic "dots" from a near by insurance companies hole punch trash.

Being at Valley was some of my best memories of high school.

I remember the ditching parties and the donut shop where we all hung out. I don't remember any violence. I dropped out in 1987 but later finished my diploma in the US Army then they made me a nurse. After almost 20 years I have come back to the OC and its sure good to be back.
