My Favorite Orange County Restaurants

There were several places to eat around Orange County that I would regard as favorites. Some of them are not around anymore.

Chicago Pizza Factory - I don't know if this was the correct name of the place. But it was located in Santa Ana, about a block east from 17th Street and Bristol. They served only chicago style pizza, of course, and some other dishes too. They had saw dust on the floor. (Update: This place was actually the first BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse, before they became "BJ's")

Rubino's Pizza - Probably my favorite pizza joint of all time. They had several locations, including one in Santa Ana on the corner of Main & MacArthur. They had also a location in Mission Viejo, at the Portola Plaza off of Marguerite and Rancho Santa Margarita Pkwy.

Goro - For Japanese food, this was my favorite Japanese restaurant of all time. It was located in a shopping center in Irvine, on the corner of Culver and Alton. It had a "jazzy" decor. The food was probably the most authentic I experienced of any US-based Japanese restaurant.

Las Brasas - This was located in Santa Ana, right across the street from the old Zody's on Harbor Blvd, near Edinger. This is was a hole-in-the-wall type of Mexican fare. Quality-wise, it was ok. But for whatever reasons, me and a buddy of mine used to eat here a lot during our college days.

Ricardo's - This is located in Orange, on Katella, about a couple blocks west of Tustin Ave. It's actually part of the Don Jose's chain. My wife and I used to go here an awful lot, and every now and then we'd run into an old co-worker of mine who also loved going there. They have some really good margaritas, and great salsa.

Bob's Big Boy - Before Bob's started shutting down most of its restaurants, my wife and I used to go here for Sunday breakfast buffet. We'd always go to the one in Laguna Hills, right off the 5 freeway, caddy-corner to the Laguna Hills Mall. I think it's a Carrows now.

What were your favorite eateries in Orange County? Post a comment below.

  1. I was born in Santa Ana in 1949 and grew up eating at La Fonda. It was on South Main St. and had a wishing well out in front. It was the best Mexican food ever. The family closed in down in the mid 90's.

There was a great drive-in or go eat inside across from the Orange County Fairgrounds. It was called Bud's and it was great home style food.

  2. I remember Russ Hamburgers on Newport Blvd. near 23rd St. 15 cents or they had great chili burgers too. In Costa Mesa, this is in the 1950's we ate sub sandwiches at Freds on old Newport. They were huge, not like todays mass produced ones. My family owned, and still does "The Grant Boys" on Newport Blvd. We used to eat at El Pecadore and La Cave for lunch on 17th St. Snack Shop Jr. at 19th and Harbor, it is a pasta place today, but used to be a small training place for the Snack Shop chain which later became Coco's and was never the same. Going way back there was Sun-up donuts across from our store. Everyone in town had a personal coffee mug hanging in there. When you walked in the owner grabbed your cup and the donuts you liked without you having to say anything. We had a Coke machine in the store. It only held Cokes in bottles and they were 5 cents and then 10 cents. 2 cent deposit on the bottle if you left the store with it. Don't tell anyone, but on Friday nights when we stayed open til 9 we used to put beer in it!!

Anyone remember Pop's steak house on 5th street near the railroad tracks. The best garlic bread and blue cheese dressing. Giant baked potatoes with cheese sauce. Funny I remember those things more than the steaks. Yummies was near our house at 17th and Bristol. They had killer hot fudge sundaes. Chinese take out from Koo's on main. Buds across from the Fair grounds. We always had breakfast there on Sunday before we opened the store. Father and son ran it, big Bud and little Bud. Charlies Chili in Newport. Also, the original Chart House, the Ancient Mariner overlooking the bay. Nana's for tacos at the fun zone. Frozen bananas. There was a little german place on Baker in Costa Mesa, which was way out there near Bristol called Mutter's cafe. A huge German woman owned it and made huge breakfast's. I remember one called "Farmers breakfast". It was german homefries with diced ham and in a big mound and covered with 4 scrambled eggs. We ate Japanese at Kono Tea House on Harbor. We always laughed when the waitress listed the dessert and said "rime sherbet". The Yorba room at Buffums was great for dinner. Club 33 at Disneyland, we are still members. Always fun to take business clients there for lunch. Belisles on harbor, that pink building, and huge portions. Victor Hugo in Laguna Beach for special occasions, now Las Brisas. Orange county was really a small town place, no chains, just great mom and pop places. I could go on and on. Maybe another time. Mike Grant

  3. I drive past "The Grant Boys" everyday and wonder about the history. Has it changed much? In the 1970s were levis all the rage? (Have they ever gone out of fashion?) Did John Wayne ever come into your store--he being in alot of Westerns. Newport Blvd. sure has changed! Thanks for the memories!!

i lived in HB and worked at the rusty pelican "74- i am suprized to see it is still there but owned by "bubba gumps?"

  5. The place across the street from Buffums Santa Ana
was Chez Cary. Short ladies were offered a foot
stool so their feet would touch the floor. Your
car was brought around just as you were stepping out of the restraurant. We miss it!!!!

  6. Does anyone remember the Chinese restaurant called Hong Kong? It was on Brookhurst or Euclid in Anaheim . . . Delicious paper wrapped chicken and HUGE drinks with multiple straws!!!

  7. Boy do these posts bring back fond memories of OC in the 1970s..My wife and I were recently married, little money--I was a fellow at UCI in Medicine and we would search out restaurants where we could afford or, sometimes splurge..Belisles was a fave after call, Chez Cary when we could splurge..Wil Wright's ice cream parlor on PCH, the Reuben E Lee (strange place to us), Miones--the best pizza I still have ever eaten..perhaps Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest SanDiego is close..great memories Thanks all

    ReplyDelete
  8. So many great, fun places gone.... I loved Wil Wright's ice cream and that buttery feel in your mouth, Belisle's huge portions, the Reuben E Lee just for something different (different until my high school held every awards/school function there, there or the Tale of the Whale) and of course Mione's great pizza. There was also a great Italian/pizza place in Town & Country shopping center across the street from Santa Ana Fashion Square (Now Main Place). They had great Stromboli.

And speaking of Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest, I found Luigi's in Golden Hill that I think is even better.

Does anyone remember the Pup n taco on Bushard right by FV High??Chili dogs? First place i had a taquito! And...Lucci's deli on Adams in HB..God rest the salami grinder! I had the unique experience of watching the Fountain Valley Drive In under construction, right behind my house on Brookhurst and Ellis! And...Is there still a strawberry festival? SCP is unrecognizable now...you guys talking about Rivira and Kaplans...those are my old digs! Anyone eat the great sandwiches at Jurgenson's Deli in the Orange Center next to Bullock's??Oh and don't forget Louie Louies in Town and Country...got drunk there plenty of times in the early 80's cant believe I never had a DUI! Love those OC sherriffs!

  11. Remember the Stuff Shirt in Newport, so over the top, and The Stuff T Shirt on the pennisula. I remember waiting for a table at the T with a glass of gin, sitting on the curb talking to the Newport police.
And a lillt boy going with my grandparents to the Victor Hugo in Laguna with th wait staff in dinner jackets, now its some cheesy over priced mexican joint.

  12. I remember Pinnacle Peaks steak house on trask street in Garden Grove. The building was a big red barn. If you wore a tie they would cut it in half with scissors and place the cut portion on the wall. Good steaks and beans. The "Trail Boss" steak was darn near two pounds :)
Also Van DeKamps(big windmill) across from Love's barbecue in Buena Park. near knott's

    ReplyDelete
  13. Flakey Jakes was a hamburger building restaurant. They had locations around southern California. I think there was one on Katella street in Anaheim near Disneyland. Also Fuddruckers close to Knott's Berry Farm.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm married to a Flower Tract person and I've heard about Zono Burgers again and again and again.

I know it's gone, but does anyone remember what was so special about the hamburgers? I'd love to try to find something similar in Orange County for my husband.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Flakey Jakes.... build your own burger. And fuddruckers.

  16. Love you blog.
I grew up in Huntington Beach.
I'm familiar with all the places you've mentioned.I graduated from old Huntington Beach High in 1967.
    Loved the pier and PCH.
Knott's was always fun and free.
I loved the old A&W on Hwy 39 and Indianapolis.
I lived just off Bushard and Adams.
    I remember Bullock's and Buffums.
Orange Coast College and South Coast Plaza.
    Harbor Blvd.
There were so many favorites LONG before "Orange County" became a tacky TV show.

  17. I used to work at:
Delaney's on Ball Rd. in Anaheim.
    Rueben's on Ball/St College & the one on 55 frwy/S of Lincoln.
Ruby Begonia's inside Griswold's off the 91 frwy.
Sargent Pepper's on the Disneyland Hotel side.
    Nieuport 17.
    Charlie Brown's in Anaheim.
Salvatore's Italian Food on Garden Grove Blvd (They had the best saute mushrooms. Only the owner made them. He never let anyone see or have his receipe). When I worked there, they had the best italian food. I think the owner's got divorced. They both drank a lot! Would love some of their food again!

I'd hang out at Marri's pizza by Disneyland.
Also I went to the Jolly Roger's (still there) in Anaheim (Harbor/Katella) to see Jack Larson & Oscar Velez & Paul Biondi (when Jack left - they are still personal friends).
The Kettle (They also played there too).
    The Revere House in Tustin.
The British Pub on St College in Anaheim

    Other favorites were:
Sambi's of Tokyo in Downey (last time I was there several years ago it had gone downhill. It used to be very elegant & have the best lobster I ever ate!)
    Q-Burger in La Habra.
    Rutabegorz in Fullerton.
Chicken Delight in La Habra (I think it used to be a chain).
Gulliver's by the OC Airport.(Part of the triangle I think).
    Crazy Horse in Santa Ana.
    The Cowboy in Anaheim.
Joe Jost's in Long Beach (oldest bar there & the BEST polish sandwiches)! It's still there!
Me n' Ed's Pizza in Fullerton (where the Ram's always hung out after practice). Wilt Chamberlain used to like to pick me up and stand me on top of the fireplace there.
Still another favorite which is still there is Villa Nova in Newport Beach. Great food! Great place to watch the Boat Show at Christmas & Great Entertainment too (Since the Thursday Night entertainment is my daughter's dad ~ Dave Alcantar).

No one mentioned a place I always went as a kid for my birthday: The King's Retreat off Whittier Blvd. in Whittier. Also the other place I'd pick was called Trapper's Inn in La Habra, just south of Whittier Blvd. Both places had the best steaks! But off course, the best place still will always be: Belisle's! OMG...I could go on and on!

With everyone loving all these places so much that have closed, I can't believe someone doesn't try and re-open or duplicate the originals that everyone loved! We could start with Belisle's! Maybe we just need the old staff and receipes to come together again!

The Beetles movie came out in what '65? and the movie ticket cost $1.00 !! I remember is was a blue ticket. And Mario's in H.B...I lived across the street. I too miss the Salmagundi's in S. Coast Plaza, and when I relocated to Nor Cal in the 80's I would go to the original one in downtown SF, till it too closed. Best pizza I ever had was at "Back Alley Pizza" in Fountain Valley. Also thought the Velvet Turtle was great. Used to love the "Stuft Shirt" in Newport. All gone now.

  35. Hi, everyone, I'm looking information about a Mexican restaurant in Anaheim. I'm not sure about the name. I think is Señor Desi, located in State College Blvd, close to the Angels' Stadium. The reason is that my in-laws remembered that place when they were dating back in the 70's.

  40. As a former Manager of a Fiddlers Three Resturant, and having moved from the area in 1991, I was surprised to see they have vanished. I thought they, of all the restaurant chains, would survive. Considering that they were all over So. Cal...

I checked at Long Beach City Hall and the upstarts working there had 'never heard of it'! Sad times.

  50. To Keith on Oct27th ,2009. That club was "Harmony Park" on Broadway in Anaheim. Just of the 5 Fwy and Manchester. Lots of big name stars in it's day. Richard Berry of "The Kingsmen" wrote "Louie Louie" there while on a break from performing. Harmony Park was torn down when Anaheim went through it's "redevelopment phase" approx 20 years ago. What a loss in the name of "progress".

  84. It opened as Beany's. The popular puppet show on channel 5 in the afternoon. The biggest shock of my childhood was seeing the puppets in person at the opening, they were so small. On TV you have no idea of their size. I think it later became a Russ's location, the best chili burgers ever!

  98. Noel's Sea Food restaurant in Sunset Beach was the only restaurant I would happily wait in line for. I am not a real big seafood fan, but I never had better sea food than from Noel's. As I recall, family owned, operated and fished! Truly one of a kind. And it was across from Sam's. When there was no waiting at Sam's, and you see a long line for Noel's, you knew the reason why!

  99. Reubens, the Reuben E. Lee and Isadores, all three occupying the corner of PCH and Bayside Drive in Newport Beach, were owned by Far West Services, and then later by the Grace Corporation. They also owned the Cocos and Plankhouse chain.

  100. I used to be one of the managers at Isadores, all the way up until they closed. When were you there, and what was your brother's name? I moved on too... now living in Yokohama, just south of Tokyo. ;) Naugles??? Yeah, I remember Naugles... it was often a staple for diner, or breakfast at the Pacific Coast Diner as the sun rose...

  101. The original Red Onion was opened up by two brothers down on Newport Blvd, next to Woody's Wharf and across from the Newport pier. It had a boat dock and was near a bunch of boats as well. They did pretty well, at least in the late 70's... one of the brothers (the bigger one) drove a Rolls Royce, and the other one drove a fire-engine red Ferrari 308GT. Not bad for selling tacos and burritos...

  107. I don't think it's still there, and you were right not to go to the one at the Spectrum. It was horrible. Yuk. I loved the original Crazy Horse, I had tickets there to see Ricky Nelson, but he died before the appearance and they refunded our ticket price.
