I tried to keep what I could but hard to preserve after so long. I went there so much still have many of the Lenox plates mom got there with the price tags on the boxes. We ate rarely at the Yorba room it was more a treat and we'd be there off hours so if we did stop in it was deserts I just recall it being pretty dark as a kid. What I recall the best is running up and down the stairs to that upper floor (thought it was the 3rd level) that went over the parking lot till I got stopped for running. Buffums was always part of the shopping day out and paying bills like the phone, electric and gas which were up the street from there (back when folks paid their bills in person). I also recall marketing day was to the ThriftyMart (the big T) and the K-mart on the other side of Santa Ana. Hey don't forget to grab a burger over at the counter in Woolworths if you happen to be downtown there.rondhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09244742902902077052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10397898.post-30229460063019801952013-05-10T22:31:47.170-07:002013-05-10T22:31:47.170-07:00I just came across this post...it made me so sad f...I just came across this post...it made me so sad for you. It was a great store to work for. I feel a tingle in my heart when I think of it. Oh, and I can't even remember how often I had lunch in the tearoom. She was a good friend of Josie(head cook). My mother died in 1980. Buffums was a beautiful store and I have some good memories and sad one's too. But I remember how my Mom enjoyed the people, she remembered families with their young kids, and watch them grow and yes those cream colored gift boxes with golden sea shell pattern with a big bow they did take pride in gift wrapping. For a while, even into the 70s, thety would have fashion shows from table to table, featuring clothes you could buy therre, of course. I remember they were famous for their chicken salad, although I found it to be plain old chicken salad like my grandmother made. I worked on broadway and could walk over to Main and have lunch in a staid, classy dining room at Buffums...bit pricey, but hey, it was Buffums! When that store closed, the ladies I worked with made a beeline for the close-out sales!! It was THE department store of my Fullerton childhood. It's funny how much I remember that store: the gazebo-like changing rooms in the children's department, the toy area on the third (?) floor, the tea room and the chocolate-covered reception sticks at the register. It was definitely of a different era. The OP's comment about the "muddy" colors of the murals in the tea room rings a bell, which makes me wonder if the tea rooms were similar. Would love to see pictures of the La Habra Buffums, but haven't found a single one on the web.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10397898.post-72971254311828666302011-10-18T00:00:53.571-07:002011-10-18T00:00:53.571-07:00My grandmother would take me to the top floor rest...My grandmother would take me to the top floor restaurant of the La Habra store to get a monte cristo sandwich. I can honestly say that I've been searching for a monte cristo that even comes close to Buffums' ones. I also liked the 3-levels atrium design with the "floating" escalators. Actually I was almost scared to ride those when I was a kid. I also got my first charge card account there. They had some kind of program that your parents would co-sign for you to have your own junior account. I believe the limit was $200. I still have that card :) I just thought about the commercial they had where the tagline was "I've been to Buffums'" I miss you Buffums!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10397898.post-52413299878131896322011-09-30T18:32:23.976-07:002011-09-30T18:32:23.976-07:00The Yorba Room was one of the few nice places to h...The Yorba Room was one of the few nice places to have lunch in downtown SA. Pretty much everything on the varied menu was good, and they offered adult beverages. Although the majority of patrons were upscale shoppers in the store, quite a few businessmen and professions went there, sometime with colleagues or clients. I believe the Buffums chain was owned by an Australian company by the time the SA store closed down. She made salad's for people. She came home from work one time and told me that John Wayne had come in to the store and eaten one of her salad's. She was quite proud. My mom died in 1968 when I was 15 years old. I will soon be 58 years old. It was a LONG time ago. I was a real momma's boy! I cried for three days when she died.
